Rheinmetall Secures Multi-Billion Euro Contract to Modernize Bundeswehr’s Communication Network

(IN BRIEF) Rheinmetall has secured a major contract to support the Bundeswehr’s digitalization initiatives by providing a deployable communication network, known as TaWAN LBO, under a multi-billion-euro framework agreement. The first call-off, worth €1.88 billion, will see the delivery of the system to the Bundeswehr by 2029. TaWAN LBO is designed to enhance the connectivity between tactical and rear-echelon networks using Protected Core Network technology, supporting the Bundeswehr’s mission and operational needs. Rheinmetall will also supply vehicles and mobile systems to complement the communication network’s infrastructure.

(PRESS RELEASE) DÜSSELDORF, 4-Feb-2025 — /EuropaWire/ — Rheinmetall has secured a significant contract for the Bundeswehr’s ambitious digitalization initiatives, marking a key step in modernizing the German armed forces’ communications capabilities. As the prime contractor, Rheinmetall Electronics GmbH will spearhead the development of the “Tactical Wide Area Network for Land Based Operations” (TaWAN LBO), a cutting-edge, deployable communication network designed to enhance the Bundeswehr’s digital infrastructure. This framework contract, valued at several billion euros and with a ten-year term, represents a major investment in the future of military communications.

The first call-off under this framework contract has already been placed, with an initial order worth €1.88 billion for the supply of this tactical communication network to equip a division of the Bundeswehr. The delivery timeline for this advanced communication system spans from the end of 2026 to the conclusion of 2029.

Armin Papperger, CEO of Rheinmetall AG, expressed gratitude for the trust placed in the company by the Bundeswehr, emphasizing the importance of providing a seamless and reliable communication network. “With TaWAN LBO and D-LBO now coming from a single source, we can ensure synchronized coordination between both systems, ultimately supporting the Bundeswehr’s ambitious goals in digitalization,” he stated. “Our aim is to deliver a communication network that stands as a flagship for digitalization in Germany.”

TaWAN LBO will play a pivotal role in connecting forward tactical networks with the rear-echelon core network, using an open transport network based on Protected Core Network (PCN) technology for Federated Mission Networking (FMN). This system will ensure high-speed connectivity, expanding the command capabilities of the armed forces and enabling effective communications across various operational levels.

As part of the project, Rheinmetall will also deliver 102 protected 8×8 HX trucks from Rheinmetall MAN, which will carry large directional radio systems and mobile antenna masts. These vehicles, equipped with functional containers housing workstations, servers, and other vital equipment, are integral to the deployment of the system. Smaller mobile antenna systems will also be deployed, all managed by a sophisticated, software-based directional radio management system designed to optimize operations.
