Rheinmetall Partners with INERATEC to Embed On-Site Synthetic-Fuel Production in Defense Infrastructure

(IN BRIEF) Rheinmetall has teamed up with INERATEC to deliver Giga PtX modular Power-to-Liquid plants for on-site synthetic-fuel production at military bases, critical facilities, and infrastructure. These systems use renewable hydrogen and CO₂ to generate kerosene, diesel, and gasoline equivalents—enabling uninterrupted operations during crises without engine modifications. With a phased deployment starting in late 2025, Rheinmetall will integrate these units into existing logistics networks, providing NATO-scale fuel resilience and supporting Europe’s transition to carbon-neutral energy sources.

(PRESS RELEASE) DÜSSELDORF, 16-Jun-2025 — /EuropaWire/ — Rheinmetall and INERATEC have entered a strategic partnership to deploy modular Power-to-Liquid (PtL) plants—known as Giga PtX—across defense and critical infrastructure sectors worldwide. By integrating INERATEC’s cutting-edge synthetic-fuel technology with Rheinmetall’s defense-grade systems and logistics expertise, we will deliver reliable, on-site production of carbon-neutral fuels that mirror the energy density, storability, and versatility of conventional petroleum, all without modifying existing vehicle engines or supply chains.

Modern defense operations—and vital civilian services such as hospitals—require uninterrupted fuel availability. Traditional fossil-fuel logistics are vulnerable in crisis situations, while military forces can consume between 20 and 60 liters of fuel per person each day. Our Giga PtX systems convert renewable hydrogen and captured CO₂ into high-performance e-fuels (kerosene, diesel, gasoline), ensuring energy sovereignty even under geopolitical or infrastructure stress.

“In an era where energy autonomy is as critical as weapon systems, these modular PtL plants will empower our forces to operate independently,” said Shena Britzen, Head of the Hydrogen Program at Rheinmetall. “Partnering with INERATEC lets us embed synthetic-fuel production directly into defense and security installations, fortifying both resilience and sustainability.”

Launching in phased roll-outs from late 2025, Rheinmetall will integrate these Giga PtX units into existing fuel networks at bases and strategic sites. The result is a NATO-scale, decentralised fuel supply chain that remains functional in peacetime and conflict alike, while advancing Europe’s drive toward carbon neutrality.
