(PRESS RELEASE) DÜSSELDORF, 8-Feb-2025 — /EuropaWire/ — Rheinmetall has been awarded its largest-ever framework contract to date, valued at €3.1 billion, by the Federal Office for Equipment, Information Technology and In-Service Support of the Bundeswehr (BAAINBw). This contract will run until 2030 and covers the procurement of up to 368 platoon systems, including the regeneration of 68 existing units. The initial firm order for 92 platoon systems, worth approximately €417 million, includes the refurbishment of the 68 current systems, marking a major step in the modernization of Germany’s military soldier-systems.

The contract is focused on upgrading and enhancing the Bundeswehr’s “Infantry Soldier of the Future – Enhanced System” (IdZ-ES), which plays a crucial role in modernizing the German armed forces’ approach to digital combat operations. These systems, which are essential components in networked combat scenarios, will be connected to the D-LBO information and communication network, allowing seamless data exchange between soldier-systems and military vehicles such as the Boxer armoured transport and Puma infantry fighting vehicles.

Signed on 6 February 2025, this framework contract represents the largest procurement of soldier-systems in Rheinmetall’s history and underscores the growing importance of advanced soldier-systems for future military engagements. Rheinmetall will lead the project as the general contractor, overseeing the performance of over 30 subcontractors to ensure the delivery of cutting-edge technology to the Bundeswehr.

The platoon systems consist of 34 individual soldier-systems along with a suite of advanced peripherals, including IT equipment, optics, optronics, military clothing, and protective gear. Rheinmetall’s role will include coordinating the system’s integration and ensuring that the systems meet modern digital standards and are compatible with the evolving demands of the battlefield.

“We are thrilled to play a key role in equipping the Bundeswehr with state-of-the-art soldier-systems that will enhance their operational effectiveness in the digital battlefield,” said a Rheinmetall spokesperson. “This contract not only marks a milestone in Rheinmetall’s growth but also demonstrates the Bundeswehr’s commitment to advancing its capabilities through innovation and digital transformation.”

The contract also focuses on eliminating outdated components, ensuring that the new IdZ-ES systems are fully compatible with the latest military platforms and technologies, including the Boxer and Puma vehicles. The updated design will provide enhanced interoperability, ensuring that the Bundeswehr remains at the forefront of military technology for years to come.
