Ramboll joins Region Stockholm’s major Norra Hagastaden urban transformation project to support sustainable infrastructure and planning

(IN BRIEF) Ramboll has been appointed as technical consultant for the long-term redevelopment of Norra Hagastaden in Stockholm, a major urban transformation project led by Region Stockholm with Locum serving as the client. The initiative will convert a historic hospital district into a modern urban environment combining residential housing, healthcare services, and innovation-oriented facilities. The development plans include approximately 3,000 homes and around 150,000 square metres of commercial and operational space. Ramboll will support multiple aspects of the project, including planning streets and public spaces, designing infrastructure systems, and coordinating complex underground utilities that require upgrading or reconstruction. The project also involves repurposing existing buildings while selectively demolishing others. Because healthcare operations must continue during redevelopment, the project requires careful planning and technical coordination. Ramboll will work closely with Locum and partners such as White Arkitekter, contributing sustainable and resilient engineering solutions while preserving the historical identity of the district. The consultancy assignment is expected to run through 2033.

(PRESS RELEASE) COPENHAGEN, 9-Mar-2026 — /EuropaWire/ — Ramboll has been selected as technical consultant for the continued development of Norra Hagastaden in Stockholm, a large-scale urban transformation initiative led by Region Stockholm with Locum acting as the client responsible for project execution. The assignment places Ramboll within Locum’s project organisation to support the long-term redevelopment of the district, which is evolving from a historic hospital area into a modern and sustainable urban environment.

Norra Hagastaden is one of the most ambitious urban development efforts currently underway in the Stockholm region. The project aims to transform an area historically defined by brick hospital buildings into a dynamic district combining residential housing, healthcare services, public spaces, and innovation-oriented facilities.

Ramboll’s involvement builds on the company’s longstanding connection to the area. The firm previously contributed to early studies during the planning stages that preceded the modernisation of the district and played a role in the implementation of the Karolinska University Hospital. According to Anette Seger, Managing Director of Ramboll Sweden, participating in the next phase of Norra Hagastaden’s transformation represents an important continuation of that engagement.

The development programme for Norra Hagastaden includes the creation of approximately 3,000 new homes and around 150,000 square metres of commercial and operational premises over the coming decades. Ramboll’s responsibilities will span multiple concurrent sub-projects, including the planning of future streets, public squares, and green spaces, as well as the design and coordination of technical supply systems and complex underground infrastructure.

The area’s existing infrastructure adds significant technical complexity to the project. Various underground systems must be disconnected, upgraded, or reconstructed as the district evolves. At the same time, several buildings will be repurposed for new uses while others will be selectively demolished with elements reused as part of the redevelopment strategy.

A further challenge is that essential healthcare and operational activities in the district must continue during construction and redevelopment. This requirement places considerable demands on coordination, technical reliability, and careful planning throughout the project timeline.

Anette Seger noted that Ramboll’s multidisciplinary expertise and experience in managing technically complex urban environments will play an important role in addressing these challenges. The firm’s combination of broad engineering capabilities and specialised technical knowledge allows it to coordinate the various design and infrastructure elements required for a project of this scale.

Preserving the distinctive identity of Norra Hagastaden is another key aspect of the development. The area’s historic brick architecture, its longstanding healthcare functions, and its extensive technical systems form a defining part of the site’s character. Ramboll’s work will therefore focus on delivering sustainable and resilient solutions for land use, infrastructure, and technical systems while respecting the heritage and identity of the district.

Working alongside Locum and a broader network of partners, Ramboll will contribute to shaping a district designed to support both residents and businesses through safe, inclusive, and environmentally responsible urban development.

The assignment covers design-oriented technical consultancy services related to construction preparation, land development, infrastructure, and technical installations. Ramboll will also carry out technical studies, detailed design work, and coordination tasks within Locum’s project organisation. The company will collaborate with White Arkitekter and other consulting partners involved in the project.

The consultancy assignment is expected to continue until 2033 as Norra Hagastaden progresses through its long-term redevelopment programme.
