Pearson introduces AI Literacy Modules in higher education courses to strengthen ethical AI use and workforce readiness

(IN BRIEF) Pearson has launched AI Literacy Modules to help students use AI responsibly while supporting faculty concerns about misuse in academic work. Available this fall in over 170 MyLab and Mastering courses across multiple disciplines, the modules cover key skills such as validating AI outputs and citing AI tools. Students who complete the modules receive Credly by Pearson badges, with a capstone badge for finishing all three. The initiative responds to overwhelming demand from educators for guidance on ethical AI use and builds on Pearson’s broader AI learning ecosystem, including its Generative AI Foundations Certification. Backed by learning science and expert review, the modules aim to enhance learning integrity, improve student outcomes, and equip learners with skills increasingly valued in the workforce.

(PRESS RELEASE) LONDON, 6-Sep-2025 — /EuropaWire/ — Pearson (FTSE: PSON.L), the world’s lifelong learning company, today unveiled its new AI Literacy Modules, designed to help students understand, use, and evaluate AI responsibly while supporting faculty efforts to uphold academic integrity. The launch reflects rising demand for AI-related skills in higher education and industry, as well as growing concern over how students use generative AI in coursework.

Launching this fall, the three assignable AI Literacy Modules will be integrated into more than 170 MyLab and Mastering courses across disciplines including STEM, business, health professions, and the humanities. Each short, student-friendly module is aligned to practical, real-world applications such as validating AI-generated results and citing AI tool outputs correctly. The modules will be offered in the United States and select global markets. A Forbes survey of U.S. educators showed that 98% see a need for education around ethical AI use.

Educators have praised the initiative. “The modules are fantastic and allow students to absorb information in bite-sized pieces,” said Sarah Miesse, professor at the University of Alabama. “Much of the jargon is included, and it is defined nicely for the students.”

Tom ap Simon, President of Pearson Higher Education and Virtual Learning, emphasized: “Educators have told us they need help guiding students through the ethical use of AI in their courses to promote learning and uphold academic integrity. These modules directly address those concerns while preparing students to use AI confidently in school and their future careers. This is part of our larger commitment to teaching AI, personalizing learning with AI, and applying it responsibly in society.”

By completing the modules, students earn Credly by Pearson badges, recognized by colleges and employers. A capstone badge is awarded for finishing all three, certifying proficiency in AI literacy and responsible technology use.

The launch is part of Pearson’s expanding AI learning ecosystem, which also includes the Generative AI Foundations Certification and other digital credentials. Backed by learning science and subject matter expertise, Pearson’s use of generative AI has shown measurable improvements in student learning outcomes, fostering more engaged study and higher-order thinking. With more than 80% of Pearson’s portfolio now digital or digitally enabled, the company remains committed to advancing AI’s responsible application in teaching, learning, and workforce development.
