ORLEN Wind 3 Acquires Major Renewable Energy Assets from EDP Renewables Polska

(IN BRIEF) ORLEN Wind 3, a subsidiary of the ORLEN Group, has signed a preliminary agreement to acquire two solar PV farms and a wind farm from EDP Renewables Polska for approximately PLN 1.15 billion. This acquisition, one of the largest in Poland’s renewable energy sector, will increase ORLEN’s renewable generation capacity by nearly 30%, providing around 400 GWh annually to power nearly 182,000 households. The deal includes a 40 MW solar farm in Chotków, a 200 MW solar farm in Przykona, and a 26 MW wind farm in Łódź. ORLEN aims to reach 9 GW of renewable capacity by 2030, including significant offshore wind projects.

(PRESS RELEASE) PŁOCK, 2-Aug-2024 — /EuropaWire/ — ORLEN Wind 3, a subsidiary of the ORLEN Group, has signed a preliminary agreement with EDP Renewables Polska to acquire two solar PV farms and a wind farm, totaling 306 MW in capacity. The transaction, valued at approximately PLN 1.15 billion, is one of the largest in Poland’s renewable energy sector in recent years. This acquisition will boost ORLEN Group’s renewable generation capacity by nearly 30%, generating around 400 GWh annually and powering nearly 182,000 households.

The agreement includes the purchase of a 40 MW solar PV farm in Chotków, Zielona Góra, and a 200 MW solar PV farm in Przykona, Poznań, with an additional 40 MW expansion underway. Once completed, the Przykona site will be Poland’s largest solar PV farm. Additionally, ORLEN will acquire the 26 MW Warta wind farm in Łódź, featuring 13 turbines built in May 2023.

Ireneusz Fąfara, CEO of ORLEN, emphasized the strategic importance of the deal, noting its contribution to ORLEN’s goal of becoming a key player in Central and Eastern Europe’s energy transition. He reiterated ORLEN’s commitment to expanding its renewable energy portfolio.

Duarte Bello, Head of Europe at EDP, highlighted the quality and sustainability of EDP’s assets and their ongoing commitment to Poland’s renewable energy market, where they have developed over 1GW of capacity.

The ORLEN Group aims to achieve 9 GW of installed renewable capacity by 2030, with significant projects in onshore wind, solar PV, and offshore wind sectors. The Baltic Power offshore wind project, a joint venture with Northland Power, is set to contribute nearly 1.2 GW to the Polish grid by 2026, enough to power over 1.5 million households.
