(IN BRIEF) Neste, together with Sony, Mitsubishi Corporation, and twelve other materials and chemical companies across five countries and regions, has helped establish what is described as the world’s first fully visualized global supply chain dedicated to the large-scale production of renewable plastics for high-performance audio-visual products. The initiative connects every stage from renewable raw materials through to finished products using a mass balance approach that allows biomass-based feedstocks to be integrated into existing chemical processes while maintaining the same quality and performance as virgin fossil-based plastics. By mapping the entire value chain in a verifiable way, the participating companies can also track greenhouse gas emissions across each production stage, supporting more transparent and effective decarbonisation efforts, while the collaboration forms a key part of Sony and Mitsubishi’s broader “Creating NEW from reNEWable materials” project aimed at eliminating virgin fossil-based plastics from Sony’s products over time.

(PRESS RELEASE) ESPOO, 6-Feb-2026 — /EuropaWire/ — Neste Corporation, together with Sony Corporation, Mitsubishi Corporation and twelve additional materials and chemical companies across Asia and Europe, has helped establish what is described as the world’s first¹ fully visualized, multi-country supply chain dedicated to the large-scale production of renewable plastics² for high-performance audio-visual products. The initiative connects fourteen companies across five countries and regions, creating an integrated network that spans raw material production through to finished product manufacturing.

The newly created supply chain is designed to enable the use of biomass-based plastics in Sony’s global product portfolio, particularly in complex electronic devices that require advanced material properties such as flame resistance, durability, and optical performance. In addition to Neste and Sony, participating companies include Mitsubishi Corporation, Idemitsu Kosan Co., Ltd., Formosa Chemicals & Fibre Corporation, SK Geo Centric Co., Ltd., ENEOS Corporation, Hanwha Impact Corporation, Toray Advanced Materials Korea Inc., Mitsui Chemicals, Inc., CHIMEI Corporation, ADEKA CORPORATION, and Qingdao Haier New Material Development Co., Ltd.

Under this framework, renewable feedstocks are processed through a structured, step-by-step value chain that mirrors conventional petrochemical production routes. Neste supplies renewable naphtha, which is converted by Idemitsu Kosan into renewable styrene monomer and then used by Formosa Chemicals & Fibre Corporation to manufacture renewable polystyrene resin. In parallel, SK Geo Centric and ENEOS produce renewable para-xylene, which Hanwha Impact Corporation converts into renewable terephthalic acid, forming the basis for renewable PET resin produced by Toray Advanced Materials Korea. Additional material streams include renewable bisphenol-A produced by Mitsui Chemicals, renewable polycarbonate resin manufactured by CHIMEI, and renewable flame retardants supplied by ADEKA. These materials are further processed by Qingdao Haier New Material Development Co., Ltd. into renewable PC/ABS resin before being supplied to molding manufacturers and ultimately integrated into Sony’s final products.

The collaboration addresses longstanding challenges in the electronics industry, where complex material requirements have historically limited the use of recycled or alternative plastics. Many high-performance components require strict safety, thermal, and optical characteristics that cannot always be met through conventional mechanical recycling³ processes, making it difficult to eliminate virgin fossil-based plastics entirely.

To overcome these barriers, the partners adopted a mass balance approach4 that allows renewable biomass feedstocks to be integrated into existing chemical production systems while maintaining the same material quality as conventional plastics. By clearly mapping the entire supply chain from raw materials to finished products, the participating companies can also track and verify greenhouse gas emissions across each stage of production, strengthening transparency and enabling more effective carbon reduction strategies.

This cross-industry initiative forms part of Sony and Mitsubishi Corporation’s broader “Creating NEW from reNEWable materials” project, which aims to achieve zero use of virgin fossil-based plastics through the introduction of renewable alternatives.

The partners have confirmed that they will continue to expand the use of renewable plastics in high-performance products such as audio-visual equipment, further advancing the transition toward more sustainable materials in consumer electronics.
