(PRESS RELEASE) STUTTGART, 23-Jul-2024 — /EuropaWire/ — MAHLE, a leading provider of automotive components and systems, emphasizes the importance of technological diversity to accelerate decarbonization in the global transportation and commercial vehicle sectors. The company showcases its expertise in battery electric drives, hydrogen engines, fuel cells, and renewable fuels, positioning itself as a key player in climate-friendly transportation solutions.

Comprehensive Approach to Sustainable Transport

At a recent technology event in Stuttgart, Arnd Franz, CEO of MAHLE, highlighted the company’s broad range of solutions for sustainable drive systems. “The wide variety of applications and requirements for today’s commercial vehicles necessitate an array of technical solutions,” Franz said. MAHLE’s commitment to technological diversity is evident in its extensive portfolio, which includes components for all currently electrified trucks and major hydrogen engine and fuel cell projects.

Significant Industry Presence

MAHLE supplies over 120 international commercial vehicle brands, both on and off the highway. The commercial vehicle segment represents about 20% of the company’s original equipment business, with strong growth expected, particularly in China. MAHLE’s systemic approach to fuel cell trucks will be prominently displayed at the IAA Transportation fair in Hanover, Germany, from September 17 to 22, 2024. The company’s exhibition will feature components like the fully functional electric axle with integrated SCT electric motors, a new evaporative cooling system, and a bionic fan designed for fuel cell and electric vehicles.

Innovative Solutions for Decarbonization

The SCT electric motor, known for its high continuous power and efficiency, exemplifies MAHLE’s innovation in electric drives for heavy-duty traffic. The company will present a heavy-duty e-axle, showcasing its systems expertise and readiness for mass production. MAHLE’s contributions to thermal management and fuel cell technology are also critical, with new technologies like the evaporative cooling device significantly enhancing fuel cell performance and reducing hydrogen consumption.

Hydrogen’s Role in Future Transport

Hydrogen is seen as a crucial renewable fuel for decarbonizing transportation. MAHLE is actively involved in several hydrogen engine projects, with DEUTZ set to begin series production of hydrogen engines using MAHLE components. This initiative will initially target stationary engines before expanding to mobile and off-highway applications. Franz expressed confidence in the widespread adoption of hydrogen engines within the decade.

Infrastructure and Policy Support

Franz emphasized the need for robust infrastructure to support zero-emission vehicles, welcoming EU targets for expanding charging and refueling facilities. He called for member states to exceed minimum requirements to ensure industry receives the necessary planning security. Franz also advocated for market-based instruments to promote renewable energy sources and highlighted the potential of synthetic and biofuels in reducing carbon emissions.

MAHLE’s use of HVO 100 fuel in Germany showcases its commitment to sustainable practices, significantly reducing carbon emissions in its operations.
