MAHLE launches e-compressor production in Tennessee, creating 50 new jobs and boosting U.S. EV supply chain

(IN BRIEF) MAHLE has announced the start of e-compressor production at its Morristown, Tennessee plant, marking its first North American manufacturing line for high-voltage air conditioning compressors used in electric vehicles. The project will create nearly 50 new jobs and builds on the site’s long history of piston production. E-compressors play a vital role in extending EV battery life and improving charging efficiency, positioning Morristown as a dual production hub for both combustion and electrification technologies. CEO Arnd Franz described the move as a major milestone in MAHLE’s U.S. strategy and an investment in the future of mobility. With nearly 800 employees in Morristown, 15 locations across the U.S., and close to 5,000 workers nationwide, MAHLE continues to grow its American footprint, supported by strong partnerships with local and state authorities.

(PRESS RELEASE) STUTTGART, 29-Aug-2025 — /EuropaWire/ — MAHLE is expanding its U.S. operations by launching production of its first electrical high-voltage air conditioning compressors for the North American market at its Morristown, Tennessee facility. Nearly 50 new jobs will be created with the installation of a dedicated e-compressor production line, underscoring the company’s long-term commitment to both the U.S. market and the Morristown site, which has been manufacturing steel pistons for several decades.

E-compressors are critical components in electric vehicles, ensuring effective thermal management that directly impacts battery life, charging speed, and driving range. With the new line, the Morristown plant will manufacture products for both internal combustion engines and electrification technologies at the same location, illustrating how traditional facilities can be successfully transformed to support the transition to future mobility.

“Starting the e-compressor production in Morristown, Tennessee, marks an important milestone for MAHLE as we further strengthen our footprint in the USA and our role as local employer,” said Arnd Franz, Chairman of the Management Board and CEO of MAHLE. “This expansion demonstrates how a site once dedicated solely to combustion engines can evolve into a hub for electrification products, securing its role in the years ahead.”

MAHLE credited the strong support of state and local authorities as well as the Tennessee Valley Authority (TVA) for making the project possible.

The company has a long history of innovation in piston production, dating back over a century, with its U.S. presence beginning in 1975. Morristown became MAHLE’s first greenfield manufacturing facility in North America in 1978 and today supplies steel pistons for major American light- and heavy-duty commercial vehicles, as well as high-performance aluminum pistons for motorsports. With the addition of the new e-compressor line, employment at Morristown will rise to nearly 800.

Over the past five years, MAHLE has also created more than 300 new jobs in Murfreesboro, Tennessee, focused on manufacturing thermal management products. Across the United States, the company operates 15 facilities and employs nearly 5,000 people, with its North American headquarters located in Farmington Hills, Michigan. MAHLE plans further investments in the country as part of its strategy to expand its “Made in America” portfolio of world-class automotive products.
