LANXESS Helps De Watergroep Tackle PFAS Contamination with Mobile Water Treatment Plant in Belgium

(IN BRIEF) LANXESS has supplied its Lewatit TP 108 DW ion exchange resin for De Watergroep’s mobile water treatment plant in Brussels, Belgium, aimed at removing PFAS contamination from drinking water. The modular plant, operational since May 2024, can treat up to 190,000 liters of water per hour. It is expected to operate for two years, reducing PFAS levels in Flanders’ drinking water to below 50 ppt. The system, which features pre-filtration and re-chlorination, meets high standards for drinking water treatment and provides a scalable solution for PFAS removal. De Watergroep, the largest water supplier in Flanders, is overseeing the project.

(PRESS RELEASE) COLOGNE, 19-Nov-2024 — /EuropaWire/ — LANXESS, a global specialty chemicals company, has provided its Lewatit TP 108 DW ion exchange resin for De Watergroep’s first mobile plant, designed to remove harmful PFAS from drinking water in Belgium. Located in the Brussels region, the fully modular treatment facility can process up to 190,000 liters of drinking water per hour.

Since May 2024, De Watergroep, the largest water supply company in Flanders, has been operating this containerized plant on-site. It is expected to function for at least two years before transitioning to alternative water sources with lower PFAS levels. The goal of the project is to reduce PFAS contamination in drinking water in Flanders to below 50 ppt, improving water quality for the region.

Bjoern Dinges, Application Technology Manager at LANXESS, commented on the partnership:
“By collaborating with De Watergroep, we have implemented our Lewatit TP 108 DW ion exchange resin to effectively remove PFAS from drinking water. The system meets the highest standards in drinking water treatment and delivers extremely low PFAS levels in the filtered water compared to other technologies. Mobile, modular systems like this offer a versatile solution for addressing drinking water contamination globally.”

The modular plant is directly connected to the drinking water supply pipe, treating water with a PFAS concentration of 80 ppt, which remains below regulatory limits. To ensure optimal performance and extend the lifespan of the system, the water undergoes pre-filtration to remove chlorine before passing through the ion exchange filters. The treated water is re-chlorinated post-treatment. LANXESS will support the project over the two-year period, continuously monitoring the plant’s performance and documenting the data.

De Watergroep is a major provider of water services in Flanders, covering over 177 municipalities through a vast network of more than 34,000 kilometers of pipelines, with over 1,600 employees dedicated to ensuring the region’s water supply.
