Kapsch TrafficCom Awarded Contract to Implement Sustainable Traffic Monitoring Solution in Tenerife’s Anaga Biosphere Reserve

(IN BRIEF) Kapsch TrafficCom has been awarded a €428,000 contract to implement an access management system for Anaga Natural Park in Tenerife, Spain, aimed at improving traffic regulation and enhancing the visitor experience while preserving the environment. The project includes the installation of 35 cameras with automatic number plate recognition across key access points and parking areas, providing real-time data to local authorities. Designed to minimize environmental impact and support approximately 100,000 annual visitors, the system will be operational by summer 2026 and can integrate with broader traffic systems in Santa Cruz de Tenerife. Supported in part by EU NextGeneration funds, the initiative contributes to sustainable management of the UNESCO-listed biosphere reserve.

(PRESS RELEASE) MADRID, 35-Mar-2026 — /EuropaWire/ — Kapsch TrafficCom has been selected to implement an access management system for Anaga Natural Park in Tenerife, Spain, aimed at improving visitor management while supporting the long-term preservation of this protected environment. The project focuses on enhancing traffic control within the park to ensure a more sustainable and efficient visitor experience.

Beginning in April 2025, Kapsch TrafficCom is deploying a network of 35 traffic cameras equipped with automatic number plate recognition technology. These systems are being installed across 16 locations and three main access points to monitor vehicle movements, including park entry and exit routes as well as designated parking areas. The solution enables local traffic authorities to gain real-time insights into traffic flows and visitor patterns, helping them manage congestion and maintain safe access throughout the park.

The installation has been designed with minimal environmental impact, ensuring that the natural landscape remains undisturbed. With approximately 100,000 visitors each year, the park requires a balanced approach to accessibility and conservation, making effective traffic regulation a critical component of its management strategy.

The system will be fully operational by summer 2026, at which point it will be managed by local park authorities. In addition, the infrastructure is designed for integration with the broader traffic management system in Santa Cruz de Tenerife, where Kapsch TrafficCom is also contributing technology to regulate access to coastal areas.

Valued at €428,000, the project is partly funded through the European Union’s NextGenerationEU programme, reflecting broader efforts to invest in sustainable infrastructure and environmental protection initiatives across the region.

Anaga Natural Park, located in the northeastern part of Tenerife, has been designated a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve since 2015 and is known for its exceptional biodiversity, including one of the highest concentrations of endemic species in Europe. The introduction of advanced traffic management technology is intended to protect these unique ecosystems while ensuring that visitors can continue to enjoy the park responsibly.
