Inmarsat Maritime Deploys NexusWave Connectivity Platform Across EXMAR Fleet to Strengthen Ship-to-Shore Communications

(IN BRIEF) Inmarsat Maritime, part of Viasat, is deploying its NexusWave connectivity service across EXMAR’s fleet of gas carriers to improve ship-to-shore communication, operational efficiency and crew welfare. The NexusWave platform combines multiple network technologies including GX Ka-band, LEO satellites, LTE and L-band connectivity to deliver stable, uninterrupted communications at sea. Early deployment has already improved access to business applications such as video conferencing and real-time communication tools while providing crew members with free unlimited internet access during their leisure time. The upgrade is also expected to reduce fleetwide operating costs by about 20 percent through consolidated connectivity services. The system integrates with EXMAR’s cybersecurity infrastructure and uses encryption and multi-layered data transmission to enhance security. The deployment builds on a partnership between EXMAR and Inmarsat that spans more than 20 years and aims to support the company’s evolving operational and connectivity requirements.

(PRESS RELEASE) LONDON, 13-Mar-2026 — /EuropaWire/ — Inmarsat Maritime, a company within Viasat, is deploying its NexusWave connectivity service across the fleet of EXMAR, a Belgian shipping company specializing in gas carriers, to support improved ship-to-shore communication, operational efficiency and crew welfare. The rollout aims to provide reliable and secure connectivity for vessels operating in demanding maritime environments around the world.

As EXMAR continues to expand its fleet and operate across global shipping routes, the company is focusing on improving collaboration between crews at sea and teams onshore while ensuring that seafarers have better access to digital services during their time onboard.

NexusWave is a fully managed connectivity platform that integrates multiple network technologies into a single bonded system. The service combines GX Ka-band satellite connectivity, low-earth orbit (LEO) satellite networks, LTE networks and L-band satellite services, enabling ships to maintain continuous and stable connections even in challenging maritime conditions.

For EXMAR, this approach helps ensure uninterrupted communication between vessels and shore-based operations. Reliable connectivity supports daily operations, allows real-time communication and collaboration, and reduces the risk of operational disruptions that can lead to costly delays.

The service also contributes to improving the experience of crew members at sea. Through the NexusWave system, seafarers are provided with free and unlimited internet access for personal use, allowing them to stay connected with family and friends during off-duty hours. Improving onboard connectivity is seen as an important factor in enhancing crew welfare and supporting retention within the maritime workforce.

Following the deployment of NexusWave on part of the fleet, EXMAR reports that the system is already enabling more efficient ship-to-shore collaboration and improved access to operational tools. Business-critical applications such as video conferencing and real-time communications platforms can now operate more reliably onboard vessels.

The company also expects financial benefits from the transition to the new connectivity platform. By consolidating its communications infrastructure under a single provider, EXMAR anticipates reducing fleet-wide operating costs by approximately 20 percent.

Security was another key consideration during the project. NexusWave is designed to integrate smoothly with EXMAR’s existing enterprise IT and cybersecurity systems. The platform incorporates end-to-end encryption and distributes data across multiple network layers to strengthen data protection and maintain secure communications between ships and shore-based facilities.

Before the technology was introduced across the operational fleet, engineers from both companies carried out extensive configuration testing within a ship laboratory environment. The validation process was completed within a single day, enabling the companies to proceed quickly with the broader fleet deployment.

David de Roock, IT Director at EXMAR, said that Inmarsat’s understanding of the company’s operational requirements, its global support capabilities and its commitment to evolving connectivity services were key factors in the decision to upgrade the fleet to NexusWave. The new system provides the reliability, performance and security required for efficient vessel operations while also improving daily life for crew members.

Ab Argam, Senior Sales Manager for EMEA at Inmarsat Maritime, highlighted the long-standing partnership between the two companies, noting that EXMAR has relied on Inmarsat connectivity solutions for more than two decades. The deployment of NexusWave represents the next step in that collaboration and is expected to support further technology enhancements as EXMAR continues to expand and modernize its fleet.
