GIGA Storage and TenneT Launch Pioneering Time-Based Grid Contract to Boost Energy Efficiency

(IN BRIEF) GIGA Storage and TenneT have signed the first-ever time-based grid connection contract, allowing GIGA Storage’s 300 MW battery project, GIGA Leopard, to efficiently connect to the electricity grid in Delfzijl, Netherlands. This innovative contract, part of a national effort to reduce grid congestion, grants GIGA Storage the right to use the grid 85% of the time, helping to better manage renewable energy integration and grid stability. The contract, starting in October 2025, also offers significant cost savings and serves as an alternative to traditional fixed transmission agreements.

(PRESS RELEASE) ARNHEM, 27-Aug-2024 — /EuropaWire/ — GIGA Storage, a leader in battery energy storage, and Dutch grid operator TenneT have achieved a significant milestone by signing the first-ever time-based grid connection contract. This innovative agreement allows GIGA Storage to connect its GIGA Leopard battery project, boasting a capacity of 300 MW and up to 1,200 MWh of storage, to the electricity grid, utilizing available capacity more efficiently.

This groundbreaking contract, part of the national initiative to combat grid congestion, grants GIGA Storage the right to draw electricity from the grid or feed it back into the system for at least 85% of the time. This flexible approach addresses the growing challenge of grid congestion and offers a more economical solution for large energy consumers by providing up to a 65% discount on transmission tariffs.

Minister Hermans praised the initiative, emphasizing that smarter grid usage is essential as the country works to expand its electricity infrastructure. The contract enables better use of grid capacity during off-peak hours, supporting the integration of renewable energy sources when sunlight and wind are limited.

TenneT CEO Manon van Beek highlighted the importance of this agreement in enhancing the efficiency and reliability of the electricity grid. By leveraging large-scale batteries like GIGA Leopard, the grid can maintain stability and balance, reducing reliance on traditional fossil fuel power plants.

GIGA Storage CEO Ruud Nijs echoed these sentiments, noting that the collaboration demonstrates how innovative contracts can drive the energy transition forward, contributing to a more sustainable and stable energy supply.

Starting on October 1, 2025, this contract marks a new era in grid management, offering a viable alternative to traditional fixed transmission agreements. The Dutch Authority for Consumers and Markets (ACM) approved these time-based contracts in July 2024, providing a flexible option for large business customers like GIGA Storage, while optimizing grid capacity for future needs.
