Gasum’s Charter Vessel Kairos to Use Bio-LNG for FuelEU Maritime Compliance, Cutting Carbon Footprint of Shipping Industry

Gasum’s Charter Vessel Kairos to Use Bio-LNG for FuelEU Maritime Compliance, Cutting Carbon Footprint of Shipping Industry

(IN BRIEF) Gasum’s chartered LNG bunker vessel Kairos will run on bio-LNG to support FuelEU Maritime compliance and further reduce the carbon footprint of the shipping industry. This collaboration with Bernhard Schulte strengthens Gasum’s commitment to providing sustainable solutions for maritime transport while offering compliance as a service through the FuelEU Maritime pool. The move highlights bio-LNG as a viable and renewable fuel for reducing greenhouse gas emissions in the maritime sector, helping shipping companies meet increasingly stringent regulations.

(PRESS RELEASE) ESPOO, 9-May-2025 — /EuropaWire/ — Gasum, a leading Nordic energy company, has announced that its chartered LNG bunker vessel, Kairos, will now run on waste-based bio-LNG. This marks a significant step in ensuring compliance with the European Union’s FuelEU Maritime regulation, offering a sustainable and renewable solution for Gasum’s maritime customers. The partnership with ship owner Bernhard Schulte reflects a shared commitment to reducing the carbon footprint of maritime transport and supporting the decarbonization of the shipping industry.

Kairos, operated by Gasum and owned by Bernhard Schulte, will join Gasum’s FuelEU Maritime pool, where it will act as a compliance generator, supplying the pool with bio-LNG that significantly reduces emissions. This collaboration ensures that Gasum can meet its commitment to offering over-compliance to shipping companies that need to reduce their emissions but may not have the resources to do so on their own.

“We are very pleased to take this step, which ensures that we can meet the emission reduction needs of our FuelEU Maritime pool,” said Jacob Granqvist, Vice President of Maritime at Gasum. “The demand for compliance is expected to exceed the available surplus by 2025, making this initiative even more crucial.”

Christian Breuel, Managing Director of Tankers at Bernhard Schulte, expressed his satisfaction with the collaboration: “We are excited that Gasum, as the charterer, has made the decision to run Kairos on bio-LNG. This further reduces the vessel’s carbon footprint, and we recognize the importance of joint efforts in the decarbonization of shipping.”

Bio-LNG: A Sustainable Future for Shipping

FuelEU Maritime is a European Union regulation aimed at increasing the use of renewable and low-carbon fuels in shipping, with the goal of significantly reducing greenhouse gas emissions. Starting in 2025, vessels must reduce the carbon intensity of their fuel purchases by two percent, with this requirement increasing up to 80% by 2050.

One of the key features of the regulation is the ability to pool emissions between vessels. Ships that are over-compliant can provide compliance as a service to those that are under-compliant, helping to ease the financial and logistical burden for shipping companies in achieving emissions reduction targets.

Bio-LNG, produced from biogas, is a fully renewable fuel with a 90% lower carbon footprint compared to fossil fuels. This makes it an ideal choice for decarbonizing the maritime sector, as it can be used in the same applications as natural gas while significantly reducing environmental impact.

Gasum’s Sustainability Goals

Gasum aims to provide 7 TWh of renewable gas annually, including biomethane and e-methane, by 2027, contributing to the reduction of 1.8 million tons of CO2 per year for its customers.
