Gasum Supplies 100% Bio-LNG to Wasaline’s Aurora Botnia for Fully Fossil-Free Ferry Operations

Gasum Supplies 100% Bio-LNG to Wasaline’s Aurora Botnia for Fully Fossil-Free Ferry Operations

(IN BRIEF) Gasum will supply only renewable bio-LNG to Wasaline’s Aurora Botnia, enabling the vessel’s daily Finland–Sweden route to run entirely on fossil-free fuel. The initiative, part of a collaboration with Stena Line to meet FuelEU Maritime compliance, allows Wasaline to achieve carbon neutrality for passengers and cargo at no extra cost. Gasum’s bio-LNG, produced from waste materials, cuts greenhouse gas emissions by around 90% compared to fossil fuels and can be used interchangeably with LNG. The company is expanding bio-LNG production and offers a pooling service to help ship operators meet EU emission targets cost-effectively.

(PRESS RELEASE) ESPOO, 12-Aug-2025 — /EuropaWire/ — Gasum, the Nordic energy company, will supply 100% renewable liquefied biogas (bio-LNG) to Finnish shipping company Wasaline, enabling its ferry Aurora Botnia to operate solely on fossil-free fuel for daily voyages between Vaasa, Finland, and Umeå, Sweden. This milestone marks a significant advancement in maritime decarbonization and is made possible through Wasaline’s agreement to generate FuelEU Maritime compliance for Stena Line, one of Europe’s largest ferry operators.

By running exclusively on bio-LNG, Aurora Botnia achieves immediate carbon neutrality for all passengers and cargo without any additional cost. “We have constantly worked to reduce our greenhouse gas emissions and environmental footprint, and we see the EU regulation as an opportunity for our route between Finland and Sweden,” said Peter Ståhlberg, Managing Director of Wasaline. “Through this unique collaboration with Stena Line and Gasum, we can already reach carbon neutrality and set an example for the industry.”

Jacob Granqvist, Vice President, Maritime at Gasum, expressed pride in the partnership: “We are delighted that Wasaline has chosen Gasum as its biogas supplier and proud to facilitate this collaboration with Stena Line. Renewable biogas is one of the concrete, ready-to-use solutions for cutting maritime emissions, and we are committed to expanding its availability in the years ahead.”

Gasum’s bio-LNG is fully renewable, produced from waste streams such as biowaste, sewage sludge, manure, and agricultural or industrial by-products. Its life-cycle greenhouse gas emissions are, on average, 90% lower than fossil fuels. LNG and bio-LNG are fully interchangeable, allowing Gasum to offer flexible bunkering solutions for any LNG-powered vessel, with blending options at any ratio.

In addition to increasing its own production, Gasum works with certified partners across Europe to expand bio-LNG availability. The company also offers a FuelEU Maritime pooling service, enabling vessel owners to achieve regulation compliance cost-effectively by running dedicated ships on bio-LNG to generate credits for their fleets.

With this agreement, Gasum, Wasaline, and Stena Line are setting a precedent for sustainable ferry operations in Europe, proving that climate-friendly maritime transport is achievable today.
