Gasum Expands Finland’s Biogas Infrastructure with New Heavy-Traffic LBG Station in Ylivieska

Gasum Expands Finland’s Biogas Infrastructure with New Heavy-Traffic LBG Station in Ylivieska

(IN BRIEF) Gasum has opened a new liquefied biogas filling station in Ylivieska, Finland, strategically located to serve heavy-duty freight traffic along major national transport routes and close to key logistics hubs such as DSV’s terminal. The station strengthens Finland’s LBG infrastructure at a time when logistics companies are increasingly turning to renewable fuels to cut emissions. DSV, which now operates 26 LBG trucks and three CBG vehicles in Finland, plans to station an additional biogas-powered truck in Ylivieska, supporting its broader commitment to reach net zero by 2050. The development aligns with growing adoption of gas trucks in Finland and across the Nordics, where biogas is becoming an important solution for low-emission long-distance transport. Gasum, in turn, is investing in expanding biogas production and supply to meet rising demand from both road and maritime logistics.

(PRESS RELEASE) ESPOO, 12-Feb-2026 — /EuropaWire/ — Gasum has inaugurated a new liquefied biogas (LBG) refueling station in Ylivieska, located in Finland’s Ostrobothnia region, strengthening the country’s infrastructure for low-emission heavy transport. Situated at Ouluntie 25, at the junction of several key national transport corridors, the station is designed exclusively for heavy-duty vehicles and aims to support the growing use of renewable fuels in the logistics sector.

The placement of the Ylivieska facility reflects the operational needs of freight and haulage companies, as the area serves as an important logistics hub with significant transport flows and the presence of major distribution terminals, including that of DSV. Gasum has steadily expanded its biogas refueling network across Finland in recent years, prioritizing locations that enable efficient, low-emission transport along the country’s main road arteries.

DSV advances its biogas fleet in Finland

DSV, which became one of the world’s largest logistics companies following its merger with Schenker in 2025, operates a vast global network with nearly 150,000 employees across more than 90 countries. In Finland alone, the company employs around 1,800 people at over 20 sites and handles millions of shipments annually.

As part of its commitment to achieving net zero emissions across its entire value chain by 2050, DSV has increasingly integrated alternative fuels into its operations, with biogas playing a central role in its decarbonization strategy. The new Ylivieska station is expected to support this transition by improving refueling accessibility for the company’s growing biogas-powered fleet.

DSV currently operates 26 liquefied biogas vehicles and three compressed biogas vehicles in Finland. With a major terminal located adjacent to the new Gasum station, the company plans to base an additional LBG-powered truck there during the spring, further expanding its use of renewable fuel. The broader rollout of LBG infrastructure is seen as a critical enabler for reducing emissions in road freight.

Supporting long-distance low-emission transport

DSV emphasizes that a diversified approach to cleaner fuels is essential for achieving meaningful emissions reductions across its operations. While electrification and renewable diesel may be suitable for certain routes, liquefied biogas offers a viable low-carbon alternative for long-haul transport where other technologies are less practical.

The uptake of gas-powered trucks in Finland has been steadily increasing, with gas vehicles accounting for roughly eight percent of all newly registered heavy-duty trucks in 2025. This share is expected to rise further as infrastructure expands and sustainability requirements become more stringent.

Biogas is emerging as a particularly effective solution for logistics companies seeking to reduce emissions over long distances. Finland already has a well-developed LBG refueling network, complemented by similar infrastructure in neighboring Sweden and Norway, creating opportunities for low-emission cross-border freight transport.

In response to rising demand, Gasum has committed to significantly scaling up its biogas supply for both land and maritime transport. The company is investing in its own production capacity while also securing supply from trusted partners to ensure a stable and growing availability of renewable gas in the coming years.
