Gasum and Wasaline Extend Bio-LNG Partnership to Strengthen Sustainable Shipping Across the Baltic Sea

(IN BRIEF) Gasum and Wasaline have extended their bio-LNG supply agreement through 2027, continuing their collaboration to support sustainable maritime transport in the Baltic Sea. The partnership enables Wasaline’s Aurora Botnia vessel to operate as part of a carbon-neutral shipping corridor using a combination of batteries and bio-LNG. The agreement also supports compliance with FuelEU Maritime regulations, benefiting the broader Stena Line fleet. With bio-LNG offering significant emissions reductions, Gasum is further expanding its production and partnerships to meet growing demand for cleaner maritime fuels.

(PRESS RELEASE) ESPOO, 13-Apr-2026 — /EuropaWire/ — Gasum and Wasaline have agreed to extend their bio-LNG supply partnership through 2027, reinforcing their long-standing collaboration and shared focus on advancing low-emission maritime transport across the Baltic Sea.

The renewed agreement ensures the continued supply of bio-LNG fuel for Wasaline’s operations, supporting the company’s efforts to maintain a carbon-neutral ferry connection between Finland and Sweden. Its vessel, Aurora Botnia, operates using a combination of battery power and biogas, positioning it as a key example of sustainable shipping innovation in the region. Gasum plays a central role by delivering bio-LNG that enables the vessel’s low-emission performance and operational reliability.

Peter Ståhlberg, Managing Director of Wasaline, highlighted the importance of bio-LNG in reducing the company’s environmental impact. He noted that the fuel, combined with battery technology, has been instrumental in establishing a credible green shipping corridor across the Baltic Sea. He also emphasized that Gasum’s consistent fuel quality and dependable delivery capabilities are critical to sustaining this model.

Jacob Granqvist, Vice President of Maritime at Gasum, underscored the value of the long-term partnership, pointing to trust and operational excellence as key drivers behind the collaboration. He added that working closely with Wasaline has supported the development of Gasum’s bio-LNG capabilities and strengthened its position in the maritime fuel market.

Wasaline is part of the Stena Line group, and its use of bio-LNG contributes to compliance with the FuelEU Maritime regulation. By generating emissions compliance through its operations, Wasaline supports other vessels within the group that may not independently meet regulatory requirements. Stena Line operates a fleet of around 40 vessels across 20 routes spanning Northern Europe and the Mediterranean.

Gasum also offers regulatory compliance services linked to FuelEU Maritime. Through its verified pool system, vessels running on bio-LNG can generate compliance credits that can be allocated to other ships calling at EU ports. This approach enables broader industry participation in meeting emissions targets.

Bio-LNG supplied by Gasum is a renewable fuel that significantly reduces greenhouse gas emissions compared to conventional fossil fuels, with average life-cycle reductions of around 90%. In cases where the biogas is produced from livestock waste, emissions reductions can exceed 100%, further enhancing its environmental value.

As regulatory requirements tighten and customer expectations evolve, Gasum is continuing to invest in expanding bio-LNG availability. The company’s strategy includes scaling up biogas production and strengthening long-term supply partnerships across Europe to support the maritime sector’s transition toward cleaner energy solutions.
