Experian Research Reveals the Average Cost of Attending a Wedding Abroad Has Reached £1,956, Adding Financial Pressure for Guests

(IN BRIEF) Experian’s latest research shows that attending a wedding abroad now costs an average of £1,956, a financial burden for many guests. Over 37% of Brits have been invited to at least one destination wedding in the past year, with rising costs like travel and accommodation causing some to decline invitations. For those who attend, expenses such as travel (£506), accommodation (£434), and gifts (£293) can quickly add up. To manage these costs, many rely on credit cards, Buy Now, Pay Later services, and loans. Consumer expert John Webb emphasizes the importance of managing finances when attending destination weddings and having open discussions with the couple if needed.

(PRESS RELEASE) LONDON, 22-May-2025 — /EuropaWire/ — Experian‘s latest research highlights a rising trend in destination weddings, with the average cost of attending such events now reaching £1,956. This figure is driving many to reconsider their participation due to the significant financial demands involved.

The research reveals that over 37% of Brits have received at least one invitation to a wedding abroad within the past year, underscoring the increasing popularity of these events. While destination weddings offer an exciting opportunity to celebrate love in exotic locations, the expenses associated with travel, accommodation, and gifts are becoming a financial strain for many. A substantial number of individuals (29%) have opted out of attending destination weddings due to various financial constraints, including the high cost of travel or the distance to the destination.

Among those who have attended, the primary expenses include travel (£506), accommodation (£434), outfits (£299), and gifts (£293). In an effort to manage these costs, more than 30% of respondents turn to credit cards for coverage, while others rely on Buy Now, Pay Later services (16%) or even loans (9%). Some guests get creative by renting or borrowing outfits and gifts, with 13% opting for DIY solutions to cut down on costs.

John Webb, a Consumer Expert at Experian, commented, “Attending a wedding abroad is often a memorable experience, but the costs can add up quickly. It’s important to approach these events with financial mindfulness, especially if you plan to use credit to manage expenses. Make sure to have a repayment strategy to avoid debt and a potential drop in your credit score. If you’re concerned about the costs, it’s always a good idea to have an honest conversation with the couple—they want you there but not at the expense of your financial wellbeing.”

The study, conducted by Censuswide, surveyed 2,000 UK adults and gathered data from May 2nd to May 6th, 2025.
