Exhaust technology specialist Friedrich Boysen GmbH & Co. KG received EUR 45M loan for its R&D programme from the European Investment Bank

16-8-2013 — /EuropaWire/ — The European Investment Bank (EIB) is providing a EUR 45 million loan to support the R&D programme of exhaust technology specialist Friedrich Boysen GmbH & Co. KG, which is designed to improve exhaust technology for cars and commercial vehicles and reduce emissions and noise.

As the partner of numerous premium carmakers, Boysen specialises in the development and production of exhaust manifolds, catalytic converters, diesel particulate filters, silencers and complete exhaust systems. Under the programme financed today, the supplier will develop new exhaust technologies that also meet the requirements of future stricter regulations. The exhaust systems will be used in passenger, light commercial, heavy goods and off-road vehicles.

Boysen will carry out the R&D at the technology centre at its headquarters in Altensteig, Baden Württemberg. The project also includes the construction of an innovation centre in nearby Nagold. Boysen has announced that it wishes to create new R&D sector jobs as well as safeguarding existing skilled jobs in the course of the programme.

Established in more than a dozen countries around the world, including France, Egypt, India, China and the US, Boysen currently employs around 2000 people. This means that the EIB classes it as a “midcap” – a medium-sized company with up to 3000 employees. As such companies frequently prove to be particularly strong on innovation, the EIB targets them with its finance. After providing a total of EUR 13 billion for some 200 000 SMEs and midcaps last year, the EIB Group (EIB and European Investment Fund) is endeavouring to markedly increase its lending in this sector to up to EUR 20 billion in 2013.

Wilhelm Molterer, EIB Vice-President responsible for lending in Germany, said at the signing ceremony: “Midcaps frequently manage to link innovation and the environment in an impressive way, thereby making a substantial contribution to strengthening Europe’s competitiveness. This is why the EIB sees supporting this sector as one of its core tasks. With the R&D programme financed today, Boysen is making an important contribution to ensuring the environmental sustainability of Europe’s transport system in the exhaust treatment field.”

Boysen’s CEO Rolf Geisel added: “We see enormous worldwide growth potential in the area of high performance exhaust treatment technologies and will do everything possible with our customers and partners to exploit this opportunity. R&D in the field of high tech exhaust treatment systems requires substantial investment and we are therefore delighted that the EIB considered our research programme to be worthy of support.”
