EuroPA and EPI Join Forces to Deliver Instant Pan-European Payments Across 15 Countries

EuroPA and EPI Join Forces to Deliver Instant Pan-European Payments Across 15 Countries

(IN BRIEF) EuroPA and EPI have joined forces to explore a rapid interoperability solution that enables Europeans to conduct instant, cross-border payments using their existing mobile-wallet and digital-pay platforms. The study, covering person-to-person and commercial payments both online and at points of sale, will evaluate how Bancomat, Bizum, MB WAY, Vipps MobilePay and EPI’s Wero wallet can be interconnected. Initially rolling out across 15 countries (over 382 million inhabitants), participants can continue with their preferred services while gaining seamless Europe-wide reach. This initiative, to be finalized by summer’s end, supports EU and Eurosystem goals for sovereign, efficient and innovative payment infrastructure.

(PRESS RELEASE) BRUSSELS, 24-Jun-2025 — /EuropaWire/ — EuroPA, the European Payments Alliance—comprising Bancomat, Bizum, MB WAY (SIBS) and Vipps MobilePay—has partnered with EPI Company (EPI) to tackle Europe’s payments sovereignty challenge, with an initial focus on seamless cross-border transactions. This collaboration seeks to empower consumers and merchants alike by ensuring that European citizens can send and receive funds effortlessly anywhere on the continent.

Both EuroPA and EPI bring robust, widely adopted payment platforms to the table. Together, they are assessing how to interconnect these systems—covering person-to-person transfers and both online and in-store commercial payments—across all participating markets. Their feasibility study, leveraging existing infrastructures and interoperability standards, is slated for completion by the end of this summer.

At launch, the initiative will span 15 European countries representing over 382 million people (84 percent of the EU population plus Norway). Users will retain their preferred local digital-wallet or mobile-pay solution while gaining instant pan-European reach. For nations without a domestic solution, this approach offers a ready-made pathway to participation. By linking established platforms rather than building anew, the alliance accelerates Europe’s journey toward payment independence and aligns with both European Commission and Eurosystem objectives. Ultimately, this interconnected network promises ongoing innovation, greater convenience and enhanced efficiency for merchants and end users.

About EuroPA

The EuroPA (European Payments Alliance) initiative is formed by leading mobile payment service providers in their respective European markets. Its vision is to contribute to the development of a sovereign and robust pan-European payments market through interoperability among existing payment solutions, leveraging SEPA instant payment standards and the most widely adopted mobile payment solutions in various European countries.

Within this alliance, interoperability among users of Bancomat, Bizum, and MB WAY/ SIBS (the three founding solutions) is effective since March 2025. This will enable over 50 million users in Andorra, Italy, Portugal and Spain (customers of 186 financial institutions operating across the continent) to send and receive money instantly using their preferred payment solutions. Recently, other similar solutions—Blik (Poland), IRIS (Greece), and Vipps MobilePay (Nordic countries)—have joined the initiative and will gradually be integrated into operations. This confirms EuroPA’s growth trajectory, reaching over 100 million users in 10 European countries through fully operational infrastructures and trusted brands.

About EPI

EPI (or European Payments Initiative) is supported by 16 European banks and payment service providers. They have joined forces with a common goal: to offer a unified mobile payment service, to all European companies and citizens, Wero. EPI intends to enable European consumers and to carry out all types of retail transactions simply, via a resolutely sovereign digital wallet.

About Wero

Based on instant account-to-account (A2A) payments, Wero further streamlines payments in Europe by eliminating intermediaries in the payment chain and the associated additional costs. Wero already supports payments between individuals, and will shortly unveil payments to professionals (P2Pro) and those for online and mobile purchases. Point-of-sale payments will also be offered, as well as value-added services such as merchant loyalty programs and recurring subscription management.
