Equinor Reduces CO2 Emissions by 250,000 Tonnes Annually with Partial Electrification of Troll B and C Platforms

(IN BRIEF) Equinor has partially electrified its Troll B and C platforms, cutting annual CO2 emissions by 250,000 tonnes as part of the Troll West Electrification (TWEL) project. This move is in line with the company’s goal to halve emissions by 2030. Power is supplied from shore via a 132 kV cable from Kollsnes, reducing gas usage and NOx emissions by 850 tonnes annually. The full electrification of Troll C is expected to further reduce emissions by 200,000 tonnes, contributing to a four percent reduction in Norway’s total oil and gas production emissions.

(PRESS RELEASE) STAVANGER, 11-Sep-2024 — /EuropaWire/ — On September 7, 2024, Equinor’s Troll B and C platforms began receiving partial power from shore, reducing CO2 emissions on the Norwegian continental shelf (NCS) by 250,000 tonnes annually. This milestone is part of the Troll West Electrification (TWEL) project, which aims to halve emissions from operations by 2030. The new power supply, running from Kollsnes via a 132 kV cable, powers key systems on the platforms, reducing reliance on gas.

The project has benefited Norwegian suppliers, with over 70% of the investments staying in the country. The shift is expected to lower NOx emissions by 850 tonnes per year, while the gas saved will be exported for more efficient use in Europe.

Equinor plans to fully electrify Troll C, further cutting CO2 emissions by an additional 200,000 tonnes annually. Troll B may also be fully electrified in the future, contributing to a broader effort to reduce Norway’s total oil and gas production emissions by nearly four percent.
