East Anglian Film Archive’s (EAFA) annual Mashup Filmmaking Competition now open for entries

NORWICH, UK, 03-Apr-2018 — /EuropaWire/ — Entries are now open for the University of East Anglia (UEA) East Anglian Film Archive’s (EAFA) annual Mashup Filmmaking Competition. Now in its fourth year, the competition is one-of-a-kind in the UK, offering entrants the opportunity to repurpose unique EAFA archive material to make a short film, or ‘mashup’.

Every year EAFA provides a specially curated package of footage taken from the many thousands of hours held by the archive documenting life across Bedfordshire, Cambridgeshire, Essex, Hertfordshire, Norfolk and Suffolk. The competition package for 2018 is made up of footage from home movies, amateur films, local life, advertisements and industry films.

Mellissa Beeken, who works at EAFA, said: “The competition is becoming increasingly popular amongst filmmakers who recognise that archive film is a unique source material to work with. As well as new material, each year brings a new theme.

“This year’s theme is transformation- we like to keep the theme open-ended, giving filmmakers free reign to interpret as they wish.”

Clare Ellis, also from EAFA, added: “Submissions won’t be judged on production values alone, what we’re looking for is creativity, imagination, and overall how the filmmaker chooses to interact with the archive film.”

The competition brief is to make a short film between one and five minutes duration which uses at least 50% EAFA archive material. Entrants can combine the archive films with material they have shot themselves, or use audio-visual material sourced from elsewhere.

Dr Tim Snelson, EAFA Director, said: “The competition offers new and innovative ways for EAFA to engage with the public. The filmmakers of today are being given an opportunity to take ownership of and engage creatively with their film heritage.

“Anyone with an idea, a digital camera or smartphone and a few hours can create something unique, to encourage a new way for us to look at the original footage.”

Anyone inspired by archive film can enter, whether they’re a complete novice or an accomplished professional. There are two categories, one for under 18s and one for over 18s. The lucky winner in each category will receive a £250 cash prize and a year’s subscription to Little White Lies film magazine. The winning films will also be screened at the Norwich Film Festival and will be added to the archive’s collections and preserved for the region.

As well as the Norwich Film Festival, the competition receives the support of Into Film, who deliver the BFIs Film Education programme to children and young people across the UK.

Dr Tim Snelson, EAFA Director, spoke of last year’s competition, saying: “Last year we invited all applicants and interested members of the public to a special screening at The Forum Auditorium in Norwich to watch all of the film entries together. It was a great opportunity for filmmakers, particularly for first-time filmmakers, to have their film screened to a live audience and to experience the audience’s reaction to their films.”
