E.ON Partners with CyrusOne to Deliver Local Power Generation Solutions and Boost Frankfurt Data Center Capacity

(IN BRIEF) E.ON has partnered with CyrusOne to design and implement local power generation solutions for data centers, starting with the FRA7 data center in Griesheim, Germany. This innovative solution will add 61 megawatts of power to the facility by 2029, increasing the IT capacity to 126 megawatts. The system will also integrate cooling capabilities through absorption chillers and support sustainable energy practices by being hydrogen-ready. This collaboration addresses the energy challenges faced by data centers in Frankfurt, offering near-term capacity and promoting energy efficiency while aligning with the partners’ sustainability goals.

(PRESS RELEASE) ESSEN, 2-Jun-2025 — /EuropaWire/ — E.ON, one of Europe’s largest energy companies, has entered into a groundbreaking Preferred Partnership agreement with CyrusOne, a global leader in data center ownership, development, and operations. This innovative partnership will focus on designing and delivering local power generation solutions for data centers, addressing key energy challenges in Frankfurt, Europe’s largest data center hub, which is currently constrained by limited grid capacity and connection delays. The partnership will offer energy solutions that include local power generation, grid support, power purchase agreements, and heat management, with a goal of providing near-term capacity for customers in important availability zones with delayed access to grid capacity.

FRANKFURT WESTSIDE Campus

The first initiative under this collaboration will see E.ON Energy Infrastructure Solutions (EIS) design a local power generation system, named the E.ON IQ Energy® Center, to supply CyrusOne’s FRA7 data center in Griesheim, Germany. This system will supplement the existing power supply, adding 61 megawatts of electrical output by 2029, expanding the campus and increasing its IT capacity by 45 megawatts, bringing the total IT capacity of the FRA7 campus to 126 megawatts.

“We are thrilled to announce this partnership with E.ON to provide customers with a runway to large-scale growth without utility risk by 2029. By leveraging the complementary expertise of both companies to scale innovative technologies, we are creating a unique opportunity to offer growth capacity for customers in their most important markets,” said Matthew Pullen, Executive Vice President and Managing Director, Europe at CyrusOne. “Our scalable platform will set new industry standards for the integration of advanced energy solutions, offering a replicable model for future data centers and setting the pace for European innovation in sustainable infrastructure.”

Marten Bunnemann, CEO at E.ON Energy Infrastructure Solutions, emphasized, “This partnership brings together two industry-leading companies to accelerate a sustainable digital future, developing solutions that provide both power and cooling to the data center and heat to the campus. What sets this partnership apart is its strategic depth: a long-term alliance built on shared vision, technical integration, and real benefits for customers and the wider community.”

CyrusOne’s FRA7 data center is part of the FRANKFURT WESTSIDE campus, a 73-hectare commercial and industrial regeneration project managed by BEOS AG and Swiss Life Asset Managers. The proposed local power generation solution aligns with CyrusOne’s sustainability goals and BEOS’s vision of creating spaces that support innovation and productivity. The system will also incorporate a baseload cooling integration via absorption chillers, designed to convert exhaust heat from the power generation process into cooling for the data center, improving energy efficiency and reducing power consumption.

Uniquely, E.ON’s generation system will produce power, cooling, and heat through a combustion process, qualifying CyrusOne to secure green certificates of origin, supporting its customers’ carbon neutrality targets. While initially fueled by natural gas, the system is designed to be hydrogen-ready, capable of operating with up to 25% hydrogen blended into the fuel mix and with potential upgrades for a full transition to 100% hydrogen as demand evolves.
