DNV to Provide Owner’s Engineering for AMEA Power’s 1 GW Benban Solar and 600 MWh Storage Project

(IN BRIEF) DNV will act as Owner’s Engineer on AMEA Power’s 1 GW Abydos 2 solar PV plant and 600 MWh battery storage system in Benban, Egypt. The project aims to produce 3,100 GWh of renewable power annually—sufficient for over 500,000 homes—and cut CO₂ emissions by 1.5 million tonnes each year. DNV’s responsibilities encompass feasibility analysis, design review, construction supervision, and commissioning oversight, tackling challenges posed by extreme desert conditions and complex grid‐connection specifications. AMEA Power’s broad portfolio across 20+ countries underscores its commitment to sustainable energy in emerging markets. DNV’s work will focus on engineering resilience, regulatory compliance, and battery safety, while also fostering job creation and knowledge transfer to support future developments.

(PRESS RELEASE) BÆRUM, 20-Jun-2025 — /EuropaWire/ — DNV has been appointed to serve as the Owner’s Engineer for AMEA Power’s flagship 1 GW Abydos for Renewable Energy (AFRE) solar photovoltaic complex in Benban, Egypt, complete with a 600 MWh battery energy storage facility. Once operational, this integrated project will deliver some 3,100 GWh of green electricity each year—enough to power over half a million households—and slash carbon emissions by roughly 1.5 million tonnes annually.

In this role, DNV will oversee every stage of the Abydos 2 initiative, from validating the project’s feasibility and scrutinizing engineering designs to supervising the build phase and overseeing the commissioning process. The desert setting brings its own hurdles—extreme heat, relentless dust, and demanding grid-connection requirements—so DNV will apply its blend of global best practices, specialized technical expertise, and on-the-ground market knowledge to ensure the scheme is delivered safely, on schedule, and fully compliant with local regulations.

AMEA Power, based in Dubai, is a prominent developer and operator of renewable energy assets across Africa, the Middle East, and emerging Asia. With projects spread over more than 20 nations and a portfolio that spans wind farms, solar parks, energy storage solutions, and green hydrogen ventures, the company is driving forward sustainable energy access in rapidly expanding markets. The Benban AFRE undertaking exemplifies AMEA Power’s dedication to accelerating the transition to low-carbon energy infrastructures.

“Bringing a project of this magnitude online demands meticulous technical oversight and deep regional insight,” explained Santiago Blanco, Executive Vice President and Regional Director for the Middle East at DNV. “We’re committed to ensuring Abydos 2 performs reliably from day one, aligning with Egypt’s strategic energy ambitions and delivering a resilient, future-ready power asset.”

DNV’s scope of work is organized around three key pillars:

  1. Engineering robustness – advising on component selection and plant layout tailored for high-temperature, arid conditions.
  2. Regulatory alignment – conducting advanced grid-integration simulations to satisfy interconnection standards and safeguard network stability.
  3. Storage safety – implementing DNV’s renowned battery energy storage (BESS) safety framework to address fire prevention, thermal control, and operational resilience.

Beyond its environmental contribution, the project is slated to generate nearly 4,000 construction jobs, showcasing the broader socioeconomic benefits of large-scale solar-plus-storage in emerging economies. DNV will further bolster project value through on-site quality control, performance validation against international benchmarks, and structured handover of best practices to AMEA Power’s team.

“As Egypt pursues Vision 2035, deploying reliable renewable capacity at scale is imperative,” Blanco added. “Our role bridges planning and execution—transforming ambition into operational reality and laying the groundwork for a sustainable energy future.”
