DNV introduces RuleAgent platform enabling faster navigation of complex maritime rules using artificial intelligence

(IN BRIEF) DNV has launched RuleAgent, an AI-powered tool that enables maritime professionals to access and navigate complex regulatory information more efficiently using natural language queries. Integrated directly with DNV’s rules and standards database, the platform provides real-time results, highlighted rule sections, summaries, and links to official sources, ensuring full traceability and reliability. Designed to address the challenges of managing over 30,000 pages of regulatory material, RuleAgent helps reduce search time and improve decision-making. The tool also offers vessel-specific insights when applicable, delivering more targeted guidance. Initially piloted with selected customers, RuleAgent supports a wide range of maritime rules and standards and is intended as an assistive solution to enhance, but not replace, DNV’s core services.

(PRESS RELEASE) LONDON, 23-Mar-2026 — /EuropaWire/ — DNV has introduced RuleAgent, an artificial intelligence-driven tool designed to simplify and accelerate access to its extensive rules and standards for maritime professionals. The solution enables users to query regulatory content using natural language and receive precise, context-driven answers, helping to reduce the time spent navigating complex documentation.

As maritime regulations continue to evolve, professionals are required to work with a vast body of material exceeding 30,000 pages, spread across multiple documents, chapters, and editions. RuleAgent addresses this challenge by delivering real-time access to relevant rule sections, allowing users to quickly locate applicable requirements without manually searching across multiple sources.

The platform is directly integrated with DNV’s official rules and standards database, ensuring full traceability. Users can view highlighted rule paragraphs, access concise summaries, and follow links back to the original source material, enabling them to verify information and apply professional judgement with confidence.

Cristina Saenz de Santa Maria, Interim CEO Maritime at DNV, highlighted the role of digitalization in transforming maritime operations, noting that the application of advanced AI technologies strengthens how customers engage with trusted technical knowledge. She emphasized that the tool supports more efficient decision-making and helps industry stakeholders navigate an increasingly complex regulatory environment.

RuleAgent also incorporates vessel-specific context where available. By using data such as ship type and class notations, the tool can refine search results and present more targeted regulatory guidance, further enhancing usability and relevance.

Martin Borge Heir, Project Manager for RuleAgent at DNV, noted that the tool is designed to support both experienced professionals and new users by providing a reliable and efficient way to explore regulatory requirements. He emphasized that RuleAgent offers faster navigation, clearer insights, and direct links to authoritative sources, making it easier to understand and apply DNV’s rules.

The platform currently covers a wide range of regulatory frameworks, including Rules for Ships (RU SHIP), Rules for Offshore Units (RU OU), and various reference documents such as Class Guidelines, Class Programs, Statutory Interpretations, Standards, Offshore Standards, and Recommended Practices. Additional expansions are planned to further extend its capabilities.

RuleAgent has been piloted with selected customers to validate its performance and refine the user experience prior to wider availability. As an assistive tool, it is intended to complement DNV’s services rather than replace them and does not constitute a formal certification, decision, or binding statement.

With RuleAgent, DNV continues to advance its digital offerings, providing maritime professionals with a more efficient and transparent way to access and interpret regulatory information.
