Collaborative Energize Programme Enables Sandoz and Partners to Accelerate Decarbonization Across Healthcare Value Chain

(IN BRIEF) Sandoz has joined two new multi-buyer virtual Power Purchase Agreements in Europe under Schneider Electric’s Energize programme, working with suppliers to support new renewable energy projects and expand access to clean electricity. The agreements build on a previous vPPA covering most of Sandoz’s European electricity demand and aim to further cut Scope 2 emissions while helping supply chain partners advance their own decarbonization strategies. The initiative highlights the growing role of collaborative energy procurement in meeting sustainability expectations across the healthcare sector.

(PRESS RELEASE) BASEL, 19-Feb-2026 — /EuropaWire/ — Sandoz has expanded its climate action strategy by joining two new multi-buyer virtual Power Purchase Agreements in Europe alongside nine strategic suppliers. The agreements are designed to support the creation of additional renewable energy capacity while enabling participating healthcare and pharmaceutical companies to collectively procure clean electricity. The arrangements are facilitated through the Energize programme managed by Schneider Electric.

By aggregating demand from multiple organizations, the initiative helps finance new solar and renewable energy projects while lowering the complexity and cost barriers that companies often face when sourcing green power individually. The model enables both Sandoz and its suppliers to accelerate their transition to renewable electricity and strengthen decarbonization efforts across the healthcare value chain.

Lynn De Proft, Chief Procurement Officer at Sandoz, stated that participation reflects the company’s commitment to responsible operations and the wider adoption of renewable energy as part of building a more sustainable healthcare ecosystem.

The new agreements build on a virtual PPA signed by Sandoz in 2025 that is expected to cover nearly 90 percent of the company’s existing electricity needs in Europe. Together, the initiatives are intended to further reduce indirect Scope 2 greenhouse gas emissions while encouraging suppliers to evaluate and adopt renewable electricity solutions within their own operations.

Collaborative frameworks such as Energize are gaining importance as healthcare providers and regulators increasingly call for transparent sustainability performance and credible emissions-reduction strategies from supply chain partners. By pooling purchasing power and providing a structured pathway to renewable sourcing, the programme supports broader decarbonization goals beyond individual organizations.

Sustainability leaders within Sandoz’s supply network emphasized the value of joint action. Uta Steffen-Holderbaum, Head of Sustainability at Gerresheimer Group, highlighted the company’s targets to reduce Scope 1 and 2 emissions by more than half compared with 2019 levels and to source all electricity from renewable energy by 2030, noting that initiatives like Energize help accelerate progress. Maureen Mazurek, Chief EHS and Sustainability Officer at Becton, Dickinson and Company, added that collaborative purchasing programmes provide practical routes for suppliers to access renewable power while aligning with customer expectations and long-term emissions-reduction objectives.
