BMT Supports Development of Emotional First Aid Kit to Strengthen Emergency Response for Children Across the UK

(IN BRIEF) BMT is supporting The Three Nines Children’s Charity in developing an Emotional First Aid Kit designed to help first responders provide immediate emotional support to children affected by emergencies and crime. The initiative addresses a key gap in frontline response by offering practical tools that can be used within the first critical minutes following an incident. Developed in collaboration with Learning Resources and informed by insights from emergency professionals and clinical experts, the project is grounded in both compassion and operational practicality. Building on the charity’s growing impact across the UK, including more than 300 services delivered in its first year, the initiative aims to create a scalable national solution that integrates emotional care into emergency response while ensuring pathways for continued support.

(PRESS RELEASE) TEDDINGTON, 20-Mar-2026 — /EuropaWire/ — BMT is supporting a new initiative led by The Three Nines Children’s Charity aimed at addressing a critical gap faced by first responders when assisting children in the aftermath of emergencies and crime situations. In many cases, young people are left frightened, confused, or overwhelmed, and responders lack simple, effective tools to provide immediate emotional reassurance.

The initiative is driven by a clear goal: to ensure that no child experiences the aftermath of an incident without access to prompt emotional support, reassurance, and a pathway to continued care.

Providing Immediate Emotional Support at Critical Moments

At the heart of this effort is the development of an innovative Emotional First Aid Kit. Designed as a compact, safety-focused resource, the kit equips responders with practical tools to help calm and connect with children during the first crucial 10 to 15 minutes following an incident.

BMT is contributing to the early phase of the project by helping to shape and validate the concept through research, structured study groups, and clinical expertise.

A Mission Rooted in Early Intervention and Care

The Three Nines Children’s Charity was established to support children and young people up to the age of 18 who have experienced crime, are at risk of harm, or have been affected by emergency situations. In its first year, the organization has delivered more than 300 services, steadily expanding its reach across communities in the UK.

The Emotional First Aid Kit builds on this foundation. As British APCO’s selected charity through 2027, the organization is well positioned to work alongside emergency services across the country, ensuring that solutions are aligned with real frontline challenges.

Designing a Practical and Compassionate Solution

Engagement sessions with police officers, coastguards, NHS personnel, psychologists, and other frontline professionals revealed a consistent priority: children require reassurance, calm, and a sense of safety immediately after an incident.

Findings from the Discovery Phase informed guiding principles that place children’s dignity and wellbeing at the center of the design. The resulting concept combines compassion with operational practicality, reflecting the realities of emergency response environments.

Collaborative Development with Industry Expertise

The Emotional First Aid Kit is being developed through collaboration between The Three Nines Children’s Charity, BMT, and Learning Resources, a global provider of educational and social-emotional learning tools.

This partnership ensures the solution is grounded in evidence-based practices, safeguarding standards, and real-world usability. Learning Resources contributed specialist insight and carefully selected materials to support emotional regulation and reassurance in high-stress situations.

With additional contributions from a range of professional services, the project team has agreed on an initial design for two levels of kits, which are now progressing toward prototype development.

Looking Ahead to National Impact

The Emotional First Aid Kit represents more than a collection of items. It reflects a broader commitment to recognizing children’s emotional needs during crises, equipping responders with accessible tools, and ensuring families are connected to appropriate follow-up support.

As the initiative advances through further testing and collaboration, The Three Nines Children’s Charity is moving closer to delivering a scalable national resource that could significantly strengthen early support for children in emergency situations.

BMT and Learning Resources continue to support the next phase of development, reinforcing a shared commitment to improving outcomes for vulnerable young people.
