(IN BRIEF) Bilfinger has completed a key milestone in Fortum’s €100 million modernization of its Częstochowa CHP plant in Poland as part of the company’s move away from fossil fuels. Under a contract awarded in 2024, Bilfinger is providing full EPCm services to support the conversion of the unit from coal to biomass. The boiler furnace has now been modified for 100% biomass operation, enabling sustainable heat supply during the current heating season, with fuel handling system upgrades scheduled afterwards. The project also includes preparations for a new Power-to-Heat facility. Bilfinger states that the collaboration reflects its mission to support customers on decarbonization journeys with integrated engineering, procurement and project management capabilities.

(PRESS RELEASE) CZESTOCHOWA, Poland, 8-Dec-2025 — /EuropaWire/ — Bilfinger has reached an important progress milestone in the modernization of Fortum’s combined heat and power (CHP) plant in Częstochowa, Poland, where the energy company is transitioning away from coal toward a fully biomass-based fuel system. Fortum is investing around €100 million in the transformation of the facility, which is central to its long-term decarbonization strategy. Since 2024, Bilfinger has been responsible for delivering full EPCm (engineering, procurement, construction management and project management) services to support the conversion.

The first major stage of the project has now been completed: the plant’s boiler furnace has been successfully adapted to operate using 100% biomass, allowing the CHP unit to supply sustainable heat throughout the current heating season. Upgrades to the fuel handling system will be carried out once the season concludes.

Bilfinger’s work on the project spans a comprehensive scope including engineering, cost and schedule management, procurement, commissioning and conversion supervision. The company is also preparing the integration of a new Power-to-Heat (P2H) boiler house, including pre-engineering and procurement oversight.

Wojciech Fluder, Energy Director at Bilfinger Engineering, said the collaboration demonstrates how modern engineering solutions can accelerate carbon reduction in essential energy infrastructure. “We are proud to support Fortum in future-proofing their CHP plant. Our multidisciplinary teams enable efficient project execution and help customers reach their decarbonization and performance objectives,” he noted.

Fortum benefits from Bilfinger’s broad in-house expertise across consultancy, technical design, project management and best-practice implementation, including the Bilfinger Maintenance Solution applied globally in energy and process industries.
