BASF strengthens fuel additive portfolio with next-generation Keropur series for modern engine technologies

(IN BRIEF) BASF is launching its new Keropur Gasoline Performance Additive Series to meet the revised U.S. TOP TIER+™ standard, EPA Lowest Additive Concentration (LAC) requirements, and anticipated CARB approval. The flagship product, Keropur AP 225-20, will be available commercially before the mandatory January 2027 implementation date, providing customers with a smooth transition. Designed with EPA-registered components, the additive improves fuel economy, protects engines, and supports cleaner combustion for all injection systems, including GDI engines. The updated TOP TIER+™ standard requires stricter testing for injector deposit control and stochastic pre-ignition protection, both of which Keropur AP 225-20 has passed. BASF will share final product specifications with customers in late 2025, assist in transition planning, and start deliveries in early 2026 while investing in site upgrades to support production.

(PRESS RELEASE) LUDWIGSHAFEN, 18-Sep-2025 — /EuropaWire/ — BASF has announced the forthcoming launch of its advanced Keropur Gasoline Performance Additive Series, designed to meet and exceed the revised U.S. TOP TIER+™ detergent gasoline standard and the EPA’s Lowest Additive Concentration (LAC) requirements. The new series is also expected to receive approval from the California Air Resources Board (CARB). Central to the rollout is the Keropur AP 225-20 formulation, which will be made commercially available well in advance of the mandatory January 2027 deadline, allowing fuel marketers and distributors ample time to transition without disruption.

The upgraded TOP TIER+™ standard, established by major automotive OEMs, sets a higher bar for modern engine performance. It emphasizes advanced testing protocols aimed at controlling injector deposits and preventing stochastic pre-ignition (SPI), both of which are crucial for the reliable performance and emissions reduction of Gasoline Direct Injection (GDI) and other modern engine systems. BASF’s Keropur AP 225-20 has already passed all required qualification tests and is undergoing final refinements. Using a streamlined composition of EPA-registered ingredients, the new additive enhances fuel economy, ensures cleaner combustion, and provides superior engine protection across all injection technologies.

“Keropur AP 225-20 represents BASF’s dedication to driving innovation and sustainability in fuel solutions,” stated Christian Forster, Business Director Formulations at BASF. “By introducing a product that not only complies with but exceeds the demanding criteria of TOP TIER+™ and EPA LAC, we are helping our customers remain fully compliant while contributing to reduced emissions and improved performance.”

BASF’s rollout plan includes finalizing product specifications for customers in the fourth quarter of 2025, offering full support in preparing terminal transition strategies, and beginning commercial deliveries during the first half of 2026. In parallel, the company is upgrading its manufacturing infrastructure to ensure a reliable supply of the new Keropur additive series.

With Keropur AP 225-20, BASF strengthens its role as a global leader in fuel additive technologies, delivering solutions that enhance efficiency, engine performance, and environmental responsibility well before new regulations take effect.
