Bang & Olufsen and Vollebak Unveil Spaceshop Structure and Sculptural Beosound 2 Edition

(IN BRIEF) Bang & Olufsen and Vollebak have unveiled two collaborative designs: the Vollebak Spaceshop, a 1,000 kg aluminium pop-up structure by SAGA, and the Beosound 2 Vollebak Edition speaker, featuring a novel “burnout” anodised finish. Both will launch at BIG’s Copenhagen HQ on 25 June. The exhibition also introduces the Vollebak Anodised Jacket, using a galvanic metal-fusion process. The partnership emphasizes materials experimentation—deriving unique textures from controlled anodisation—and aims to inspire new design possibilities at the intersection of art, science, and sound. The speaker is available by special order at €5,000, and the Spaceshop will tour global cities to showcase this fusion of technology and creativity.

(PRESS RELEASE) STRUER, 25-Jun-2025 — /EuropaWire/ — Bang & Olufsen has partnered with British material-science innovator Vollebak to explore new creative frontiers in aluminium, sound, and storytelling. This collaboration launches with two striking creations: the Vollebak Spaceshop—a 1,000 kg fully aluminium structure conceived by Danish Space Architects SAGA—and the Beosound 2 Vollebak Edition, a sculptural speaker finished using a groundbreaking anodisation technique developed by Bang & Olufsen’s aluminium experts in Struer, Denmark. Both the Spaceshop and speaker will debut at Bjarke Ingels Group’s Copenhagen headquarters on 25 June, kicking off a longer-term partnership focused on experimental design and materials research.

“We’re thrilled to join forces with Vollebak on such an ambitious venture,” says Kresten Bjørn Krab-Bjerre, Creative Director for Atelier at Bang & Olufsen. “Together, we’ve transformed aluminium into functional art that embodies space, sound, and the future we’re all building.”

Vollebak co-founder Nick Tidball adds, “We envisioned a ‘shop’ not tied to any city—or even this planet. A mobile hub that meets you wherever you are, whether you’re sunbathing in LA or mining asteroids in space.”

The 250 m² Spaceshop is clad in precision-engineered aluminium panels matching the Beosound 2’s burnished, anodised aesthetic. Inside, it houses Beolab 5 and Beosound 2 speakers to create an immersive, space-inspired soundscape. Each Beosound 2 Vollebak Edition is unique, its swirling “burnout” texture the result of an unexpected anodisation outcome that the teams refined into a reproducible process.

Complementing these installations is the Vollebak Anodised Jacket, crafted from polyamide ripstop fused with a near-invisible metallic layer via galvanic treatment—mirroring the speaker’s experimental surface treatment.

“Aluminium naturally oxidises for protection,” explains Krab-Bjerre. “By opening its pores in a controlled anodisation bath, introducing colour, then sealing it, we achieved a refined metallic finish. A test meant to be jet-black yielded grey swirls and darker streaks—the ‘burnout’ effect—which unlocked our final creative direction.”
