Banco de Portugal hosts European Investment Bank’s art collection in the future Money Museum’s exhibition space at Banco de Portugal’s head office

The contemporary art collection of the European Investment Bank (EIB) is presented in the future Money Museum’s exhibition space at Banco de Portugal’s head office, in Lisbon’s historic centre.

LISBON, 19-5-2014 — /EuropaWire/ — Within/Beyond Borders occupies part of the former Church of St Julian, which has been fully restored. The exhibition runs from 16 May to 4 September, Tuesday to Saturday, 10am to 6pm. Admission is free.

The exhibition features 28 of the EIB’s most notable works and was commissioned by Delphine Munro, the collection’s director, in partnership with the Museum of Banco de Portugal.

The 28 works, created by European artists of different generations, including the Portuguese, Pedro Cabrita Reis, Julião Sarmento and Pedro Calapez, represent the plurality of languages and identities that mark the evolution of art over the last 50 years.

The pieces explore the concept of the border in its various senses – real, imaginary, physical or emotional – referring to a Europe in permanent flux. The exhibition is cause to reflect on the possibility of breaking through boundaries or exploring new geographical, political, artistic and cultural ‘territories’.

In Within/Beyond Borders, painting, sculpture, photography and artworks on paper establish a face-to-face dialogue with the architecture of the future Money Museum. Here the visitor is invited to discover the work of emerging artists and others that have profoundly marked art over the last few decades.

By hosting an art collection of international significance, Banco de Portugal reaffirms its commitment to the city of Lisbon and to the country, and in particular, to cultural exponents. It represents a commitment to collaboration and sharing, reflecting the Bank’s strategic orientation towards greater openness to society.

The exhibition’s activity programme includes guided tours for adults, schools, young people and families, meetings with artists and curators, and drawing classes. The activities on offer reflect the Bank’s conviction that art generates new ideas and ways of thinking, and as such is a strategic knowledge resource for society.

The European Investment Bank’s collection comprises around 580 works of art – paintings, photographs, artworks on paper, sculptures and installations – and offers a broad overview of art in the European Union since 1958.
