Banco Bilbao Vizcaya Argentaria (BBVA) relies on Wincor Nixdorf to update its self-service channel

Paderborn, Germany, 15-1-2014 — /EuropaWire/ — The Spanish financial institution Banco Bilbao Vizcaya Argentaria (BBVA), one of the world’s most innovative banks, focuses rigorously on offering its customers an optimum banking experience no matter which delivery channel they use. That’s why the bank is relying on Wincor Nixdorf to renew its self-service channel. In cooperation with the bank’s American subsidiary, BBVA Compass Bancshares, Inc., Wincor Nixdorf developed a drive-thru concept that enables customers to consult with a member of the bank staff by video if desired. The first such system is currently being piloted in Houston, Texas. In Spain BBVA is now installing particularly user-friendly, specially designed ATMs with an extended array of functions. Approximately 100 of these ATMs, called “ABIL”, have been installed by the end of 2013.

The new ATMs offer a number of new functions compared with traditional automated teller machines. Highlights include the option of account access using an electronic identity card and a password from bbva.es, the ability to complete transactions with a contactless card that is based on NFC technology, and account statements printed in DIN A4 format. Furthermore, the system is equipped with a large touchscreen and an intuitive user interface. The bank’s objective is to establish this new self-service terminal gradually as its standard ATM.

The new drive-thru system at BBVA Compass in the USA means that many of the services offered inside the branch can now be provided via self-service in real time. When customers have questions, a member of the bank staff is available for a videoconference, enabling the bank to offer personal consulting via the self-service channel. The first ATM of this kind is currently being operated by BBVA Compass as a pilot installation in Houston, Texas, and others are due to follow across the country in the months to come. For both hardware and software, BBVA Compass relies on the quality and innovative technology of Wincor Nixdorf as a strategic BBVA partner.

Javier Lopez Bartolomé, Wincor Nixdorf Senior Vice President, Region Americas and Iberia, sees BBVA as an innovation leader and a pioneer in the use of new technologies. “With the introduction of these new solutions, BBVA is once again ideally implementing its corporate philosophy, which relies on the three pillars of leadership, innovation, and performance by people for people,” explains Lopez.
