(IN BRIEF) ANDRITZ has supplied key equipment for Mondi’s containerboard mill in Kuopio, Finland, as part of an expansion and upgrade project. The delivery includes a new hardwood NSSC production line and an upgraded woodyard, which will increase the mill’s production capacity by 55,000 tonnes per year. The improvements are designed to enhance efficiency and reduce environmental impact, supporting Mondi’s sustainability goals under its MAP2030 commitments.

(PRESS RELEASE) GRAZ, 14-Aug-2024 — /EuropaWire/ — Global technology group ANDRITZ has provided essential equipment for the establishment of a new hardwood Neutral Sulfite Semi-Chemical (NSSC) production line and the modernization of the woodyard at Mondi’s containerboard mill in Kuopio, Finland. This delivery is a key component of Mondi’s broader expansion and upgrade initiative aimed at enhancing the mill’s production of high-quality semi-chemical fluting, primarily used in food packaging.

Juha Koukka, Managing Director of Mondi Kuopio, highlighted the significance of this investment, stating, “Mondi’s purpose is to be sustainable by design, and investments like this align with our MAP2030 sustainability commitments, which emphasize circular-driven packaging and paper solutions. The new equipment and process upgrades will boost our production capacity by 55,000 tonnes annually while improving efficiency and environmental performance.”

The ANDRITZ delivery included:

  • State-of-the-art equipment for the new hardwood NSSC production line, designed to produce high-purity NSSC pulp. This line features an advanced chip feeding system, continuous NSSC cooking, blow line refining, and multi-stage washing, all of which contribute to optimal operational time and washing efficiency. Additionally, the technology reduces freshwater and energy consumption, thereby minimizing environmental impact.
  • Key equipment for a significant upgrade of the existing woodyard, including a wood handling line with slasher deck, de-icing conveyor, and HHQ-Chipper to ensure consistent, high-quality chips. The delivery also encompassed complete chip handling, featuring the ANDRITZ 360º Stacker Reclaimer for efficient chip storage and feeding to the new ANDRITZ digester.

This project underscores ANDRITZ’s role in supporting Mondi’s commitment to sustainable production and its focus on improving operational efficiency and environmental responsibility at the Kuopio mill.
