(PRESS RELEASE) SAINT-OUEN-SUR-SEINE, 17-Oct-2024 — /EuropaWire/ — Alstom, a global leader in smart and sustainable mobility solutions, has successfully delivered the first driverless metro train for Chennai Metro’s Phase II, marking a key milestone in the city’s transportation expansion. Manufactured entirely at Alstom’s state-of-the-art facility in Sri City, Andhra Pradesh, these trains are part of India’s ‘Make in India’ and ‘Atmanirbhar Bharat’ initiatives, showcasing the country’s growing self-reliance in advanced technology. The delivery is part of an order for 36 three-car trains that will operate along a 26 km corridor, connecting Poonamallee Bypass to Light House through a mix of elevated and underground stations.

These driverless Metropolis trains, designed for operational speeds of up to 80 kph, are equipped with advanced technologies such as Automatic Train Operation (ATO) and Automatic Train Protection (ATP), making them fully capable of operating without drivers under Unattended Train Operations (UTO) at the highest level of automation (GOA 4). The trains also feature regenerative braking, which contributes to energy efficiency and environmental sustainability, enhancing the overall passenger experience by reducing emissions and easing traffic congestion in the city.

Olivier Loison, Managing Director of Alstom India, emphasized the company’s commitment to transforming Chennai’s transit system: “We are delighted to support Chennai Metro’s vision of efficient, reliable, and sustainable transportation. The delivery of these made-in-India driverless trains not only revolutionizes urban mobility but also promotes greener commuting options, reducing the city’s carbon footprint.”

This €124 million project, which commenced production in February 2024, not only involves the delivery of trains but also includes comprehensive training for Chennai Metro personnel in operations and maintenance. Alstom’s involvement in Chennai Metro dates back to 2010 when it delivered 208 metro cars for Phase I of the project and completed track work covering 45 kilometers. With this latest delivery, Alstom continues to strengthen its role in shaping Chennai’s mobility landscape for a sustainable future.

Alstom’s Metropolis trains have been serving global cities for over six decades, with more than 35,000 metro cars either in operation or ordered in 70 cities across 40 countries. Known for their adaptability to both new and existing infrastructures, these trains come with flexible configurations and are designed for energy efficiency, high recyclability, and reduced noise levels, ensuring they meet the evolving needs of cities worldwide.
