Alstom Completes Cavite Extension of Manila’s LRT-1, Boosting Urban Mobility in the Philippines

(IN BRIEF) Alstom has completed the Cavite Extension of Manila’s Light Rail Transit Line 1 (LRT-1), marking its first fully integrated metro project in the Philippines. The 6.2-kilometer extension, with five new stations, reduces travel time between Baclaran and Bacoor from 70 to 25 minutes and is expected to serve up to 400,000 passengers daily. Alstom managed the design, integration, and commissioning of the railway system, including modern signalling and power systems. This project builds on Alstom’s earlier upgrades to the LRT-1 network and underscores its commitment to sustainable mobility and enhancing urban infrastructure in the Philippines.

(PRESS RELEASE) SAINT-OUEN-SUR-SEINE, 18-Nov-2024 — /EuropaWire/ — Alstom, a global leader in sustainable mobility solutions, has successfully completed the Manila Light Rail Transit Line 1 (LRT-1) Cavite Extension, marking a significant milestone in the Philippines’ transportation landscape. Officially inaugurated on November 15, 2024, by President Ferdinand Marcos Jr., alongside the Department of Transport and Light Rail Manila Corporation (LRMC), the extension commenced revenue service the following day. This project represents Alstom’s first fully integrated metro system in the Philippines, delivered in partnership with Bouygues Travaux Publics.

The 6.2-kilometer extension adds five new stations—Redemptorist-ASEANA, Manila International Airport Road, Parañaque Integrated Terminal Exchange (PITX), Ninoy Aquino Avenue, and Dr. Santos (formerly Sucat)—to the existing LRT-1 network. With the capacity to serve up to 400,000 passengers daily, the extension dramatically reduces travel time between Baclaran, Pasay City, and Bacoor, Cavite, from 70 minutes to just 25 minutes, offering a faster and more efficient alternative to road travel.

Alstom’s responsibilities encompassed the comprehensive design, engineering, and integration of the electromechanical railway system. This included modern signalling systems meeting ETCS Level 1 standards, advanced telecommunications, power supply systems, overhead catenary infrastructure, and track works. The project builds on Alstom’s earlier success in upgrading the LRT-1’s 20-kilometer trackside signalling system and equipping its 60-train fleet with new onboard signalling technology.

“By providing a faster and more efficient alternative to road travel, this project not only enhances connectivity across Manila but also offers sustainable and reliable public transportation for its citizens,” said Toby Tiberghien, Managing Director, East Asia, Alstom.

The Cavite Extension reinforces Alstom’s commitment to advancing the Philippines’ railway infrastructure through innovative mobility solutions. With over 50 years of global expertise and more than 90 integrated systems in operation worldwide, Alstom continues to be a trusted partner in delivering tailored, turnkey rail systems that improve daily lives and contribute to economic growth.
