Advanced BASF catalyst enables major energy savings and emission reductions at Nan Ya Mailiao site

BASF’s SYNSPIRE® catalyst enables NanYa Plastic Corp to reduce CO2 emissions by 38,000 metric tons per year.

(IN BRIEF) BASF’s SYNSPIRE G1-110 catalyst has enabled Nan Ya Plastics Corporation to reduce steam consumption by 40,000 metric tons and cut annual CO₂ emissions by 38,000 metric tons at its 2-EH Mailiao plant in Taiwan. The technology reforms methane and CO₂ under dry conditions, with high resilience against deactivation, improving efficiency and supporting the chemical industry’s climate transition. The collaboration highlights BASF’s catalytic expertise and Nan Ya’s sustainability ambitions.

(PRESS RELEASE) LUDWIGSHAFEN, 30-Sep-2025 — /EuropaWire/ — BASF’s innovative SYNSPIRE G1-110 catalyst has delivered significant sustainability and efficiency benefits at Nan Ya Plastics Corporation’s 2-Ethylhexanol (2-EH) production site in Mailiao, Taiwan. Installed in early 2024, the catalyst has allowed the facility to reduce steam consumption by around 40,000 metric tons each year, resulting in an annual avoidance of approximately 38,000 metric tons of CO₂ emissions.

The 2-EH plant, part of Nan Ya’s global production network, produces a vital chemical used in a wide range of downstream products. By adopting BASF’s advanced catalyst technology, Nan Ya Plastics has achieved both measurable operational savings and meaningful environmental improvements, underscoring its long-term commitment to sustainability.

SYNSPIRE G1-110 is designed to reform methane and CO₂ under much drier conditions than conventional steam methane reforming processes. It also resists carbon-induced deactivation, enabling continuous peak performance over extended operating cycles. This breakthrough allows producers to minimise steam use while maintaining strong CO₂ uptake and conversion rates, supporting the broader decarbonisation of the chemical sector.

“Catalysis innovation is one of the most powerful levers for driving sustainability in the chemical industry,” said BASF’s Catalysts division. “The Mailiao site demonstrates how cutting-edge technology and close collaboration with our partners help reduce greenhouse gas emissions and energy use, while maintaining the highest performance standards.”

For Nan Ya Plastics, the successful integration of SYNSPIRE G1-110 highlights its strategy to reduce emissions, increase energy efficiency, and expand the use of sustainable feedstocks, reinforcing its position as a global leader in the plastics and chemical industry.
