ABB strengthens global renewable capabilities with addition of Gamesa Electric expertise and 46 GW of serviceable wind converter capacity

(IN BRIEF) ABB has completed its acquisition of Gamesa Electric’s power electronics business from Siemens Gamesa, expanding its renewable energy portfolio at a time of accelerating global demand for solar, wind, and storage technologies. The deal brings approximately 400 employees, power conversion products including wind converters, BESS systems, and utility-scale solar inverters, as well as two factories in Madrid and Valencia. With the acquisition, ABB increases its serviceable wind converter installed base by about 46 GW and strengthens its Motion business area’s growth strategy. ABB and Siemens Gamesa have also entered into a supply and service agreement. ABB says the combination of its global scale with Gamesa Electric’s 45-year expertise positions it to capitalize on the International Energy Agency’s forecast that renewable power generation will rise 60 percent by 2030 and surpass coal as the world’s largest electricity source. The acquisition reinforces ABB’s long-term commitment to advancing sustainable electrification and automation worldwide.

(PRESS RELEASE) ZURICH, 3-Dec-2025 — /EuropaWire/ — ABB has finalized its acquisition of Gamesa Electric’s power electronics business in Spain, strengthening its position in the fast-expanding global renewable energy sector. The transaction—first announced in December 2024—enhances ABB’s portfolio of renewable power conversion technologies at a time when solar and wind energy adoption is accelerating worldwide. Financial terms were not disclosed, but the acquired unit generated approximately €145 million in annual revenue for the fiscal year ending September 30, 2025.

The newly integrated business brings a comprehensive suite of power conversion solutions, including wind converters for doubly-fed induction generator (DFIG) systems, industrial-scale battery energy storage systems (BESS), and utility-grade solar inverters. Around 400 employees are joining ABB as part of the deal, with teams based in India, China, the United States, Australia, and two Spanish manufacturing facilities located in Madrid and Valencia. ABB has also entered into a supply and services agreement with Siemens Gamesa to support ongoing collaboration.

This acquisition significantly increases the serviceable installed base of ABB’s wind converter fleet, adding roughly 46 gigawatts of capacity. It further supports ABB Motion’s strategic ambition of profitable growth by expanding its reach into modernization and long-term servicing opportunities as renewable installations scale. Gamesa Electric’s 45-year heritage in power electronics, combined with its technical depth in solar and wind applications, helps strengthen ABB’s global expertise and customer relationships in these high-growth areas.

“Bringing together ABB’s global footprint with Gamesa Electric’s capabilities and established portfolio gives us a powerful platform to help accelerate the deployment of renewable energy globally,” said Daniel Gerber, Business Line Manager, Renewable Power for ABB’s Motion High Power division.

The market outlook underscores the relevance of this acquisition. The International Energy Agency (IEA) forecasts that electricity generation from renewables will rise by around 60 percent—from 9,900 TWh in 2024 to 16,200 TWh in 2030. Solar photovoltaics are projected to drive more than half of that increase, while wind power will contribute roughly 30 percent. Renewables are on track to overtake coal as the single largest source of global electricity by late 2025 or mid-2026, depending on hydropower conditions.

With this acquisition, ABB deepens its commitment to enabling a more sustainable and resource-efficient industrial landscape. As a global provider of electrification and automation solutions—with over 110,000 employees and 140 years of innovation—ABB continues to help customers achieve higher productivity, efficiency, and environmental performance across sectors.
