Umeå University ranked among the world’s top 300 in this year’s Shanghai Jiaotong Academic Ranking of World Universities

Umeå, Sweden, 20-8-2014 — /EuropaWire/ — In this year’s Shanghai Jiaotong Academic Ranking of World Universities, Umeå University is again placed among the world’s top 300 instiutions. In addition, Umeå is ranked among the top 150 in the field of life and agricultural sciences and top 200 in clinical medicine and pharmacy.

On the list, which has the official name of the Academic Ranking of World Universities (ARWU), Shanghai Jiao Tong University in China evaluated over 1200 universities in the world. The top 500 are presented in the list. The ranking is based on information about the university’s research, including number of Nobel Laureates and Fields Medals, citations in scientific journals and the number of publications in the journals of Nature and Science.

Universitiesin the United States dominate the top of the league table. Harvard University retains the top spot this year. Umeå University remained in the 201-300 range along with two other universities in Sweden: the Royal Institute of Technology (KTH) and the Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences. In total, there are eleven Swedish universities on the list. Karolinska Institute was the highest ranked Swedish institution in the 47th position.

The ARWU also ranked the top 200 universities in five broad subject fields: natural science and mathematics, engineering/technology and computer sciences, life and agricultural sciences, clinical medicine and pharmacy, and social sciences.

Umeå University is among the world’s top 200 in two subject fields. In clinical medicine and pharmacy, Umeå University is in the 101-150 range (4-5 place in Sweden) in a life and agricultural sciences, and 150-200 (4-6 place in the country) in clinical medicine and pharmacy.

Last spring, two respected international ranking systems placed Umeå University among the global best under the age of 50 years, at the 27th and 39th position. These lists focus on young universities with great potential for the future.
