GKN Aerospace strengthens global additive strategy with Norwegian investment and partnership in Kongsberg

(IN BRIEF) GKN Aerospace Norway will expand its additive manufacturing capabilities at its Kongsberg engines centre through a strategic partnership with Norwegian Catapult Manufacturing Technology. Norwegian Catapult and SIVA will co-invest NOK 12 million (almost £1 million), supporting Norway’s ambition in sustainable industry and advancing GKN Aerospace’s global additive strategy. The initiative aims to accelerate adoption of additive manufacturing across Norwegian industry and reduce environmental impact through lower material use and shorter supply chains. Recent investment follows similar expansion in Sweden and the U.S. Leaders Sébastien Aknouche and Ole B. Hoen emphasised the collaboration’s role in supporting future-focused manufacturing and making advanced additive infrastructure accessible to wider industry. The Kongsberg centre will support production of critical aerospace engine components, aligning with GKN Aerospace’s long-term innovation roadmap.

(PRESS RELEASE) BIRMINGHAM, 8-Dec-2025 — /EuropaWire/ — GKN Aerospace Norway has entered a strategic partnership with Norwegian Catapult Manufacturing Technology in Kongsberg (Kongsberg Technology Cluster) to expand advanced additive manufacturing capabilities at its engines centre of excellence. The initiative will receive NOK 12 million (nearly £1 million) in co-investment from Norwegian Catapult and The Industrial Growth Company (SIVA), reinforcing Norway’s ambitions in sustainable industrial innovation and strengthening GKN Aerospace’s global additive manufacturing roadmap.

Additive manufacturing offers significant advantages for aerospace production, reducing material use, shortening supply chains, and minimising environmental impact. Through this collaboration, the two organisations aim to accelerate wider industrial adoption of additive manufacturing and build a scalable platform that supports next-generation production technologies in Norway.

The investment builds on GKN Aerospace’s recent additive manufacturing expansions in Sweden and the United States, demonstrating a continued commitment to increasing capacity and bringing sustainable production technologies closer to engine customers. The Kongsberg site’s development will include new equipment, infrastructure and technology integration aligned with GKN Aerospace’s long-term growth strategy.

Sébastien Aknouche, Senior Vice President of Material Solutions at GKN Aerospace, highlighted the importance of additive technology to the company’s future: “Additive manufacturing is a cornerstone of our vision for the future of aerospace. This partnership with Norwegian Catapult enables us to fully industrialise additive technology and bring sustainable, high-performance solutions closer to our customers.”

Ole B. Hoen, Head of Kongsberg Technology Cluster, noted that the collaboration will strengthen Norway’s position in advanced manufacturing: “Together with GKN Aerospace, we are building a platform for future-oriented manufacturing in Norway. This initiative ensures GKN Aerospace’s new infrastructure and competence becomes available to the wider Norwegian industry through learning and testing in the Catapult.”

By strengthening its Kongsberg engines facility, GKN Aerospace reinforces its role as a global additive manufacturing leader. Its proprietary additive technologies already support the production of complex, critical engine components used by leading aerospace OEMs, and the expansion positions the company to serve increasing industry demand with greater agility and sustainability.
