Novonesis launches Quara® Supreme to reduce oil-processing losses with drop-in enzymatic degumming

(IN BRIEF) Novonesis has launched Quara® Supreme, a thermostable enzymatic water-degumming solution developed to improve crude vegetable oil yield without generating free fatty acids. The biosolution enables processors to reduce typical degumming losses by as much as 2%*, while operating as a plug-in technology compatible with existing equipment. It supports soybean, rapeseed and canola refining and allows processors to switch enzymatic dosing on or off based on production economics, market conditions or protein output requirements. Vice President Hans Ole Klingenberg emphasized customer-driven simplicity and adaptability as core design goals. Because no caustic dosage or pH regulation is required, Quara® Supreme offers operational reliability and flexibility with minimal investment — helping refiners enhance profitability in a volatile global vegetable oil market.

(PRESS RELEASE) COPENHAGEN, 26-Nov-2025 — /EuropaWire/ — Novonesis has introduced Quara® Supreme, a next-generation enzyme designed to improve vegetable oil refining efficiency by reducing yield loss during water degumming — without adding process complexity or increasing free fatty acid (FFA) levels. The drop-in biosolution supports processors facing rising global demand for vegetable oils and growing pressure to maximize throughput.

Water degumming remains a standard pre-refining step used to stabilize crude oils, yet it is often responsible for some of the largest yield losses in the entire process — in some cases up to 5%. Built on Novonesis’ enzymatic innovation platform, Quara® Supreme addresses this challenge by lowering phosphorus content, delivering more consistent yield gains, and improving recovery rates across soybean, canola and rapeseed oils. Trials show potential yield improvements of up to 2%* without disrupting operational simplicity.

Designed as a thermostable, drop-in solution, Quara® Supreme tolerates oil temperatures up to 85°C and can be implemented with minimal adjustments, whether a plant already uses enzymatic degumming or relies solely on water-based processes. Its configuration flexibility allows processors to toggle enzyme dosing in response to raw material quality, market pricing or protein requirements — retaining profitability control in variable environments.

“Processors asked for a simpler, more flexible enzymatic step — and Quara® Supreme is our answer,” said Hans Ole Klingenberg, Vice President, Global Marketing, Household & Industrial Biosolutions.
“In volatile markets, plants need solutions that adapt quickly to shifting oil quality and price conditions. This innovation does that with less complexity and more control.”

For processors already using enzymes, Quara® Supreme offers additional advantages — including the potential removal of caustic dosing, streamlined heating setup, and lower intervention requirements. By preventing FFA formation, it supports trading compliance, reduces exposure to penalty risks and stabilizes oil quality.
