Industry Partnership Drives Fossil-Free Steel Innovation as EAB Adopts SSAB Zero™ for Global Products

(IN BRIEF) Swedish steelmaker SSAB has entered a new partnership with EAB to supply fossil-free steel — including SSAB Zero™ — for EAB’s core product lines, which include warehouse fittings, industrial doors, and steel building systems. EAB is already using SSAB Zero™ in its Radioshuttle™ automated storage platform, marking a meaningful step in industrial decarbonization. The collaboration highlights both companies’ commitment to sustainability and innovation, with EAB targeting a 50% reduction in carbon emissions over the next decade. SSAB continues to lead the transition to fossil-free steel through products like SSAB Zero™ and its pilot SSAB Fossil-free™ steel, which uses hydrogen to eliminate CO₂ emissions from steel production. The partnership illustrates a practical, scalable solution to reducing the environmental footprint of industrial steel usage.

(PRESS RELEASE) STOCKHOLM, 17-Nov-2025 — /EuropaWire/ — SSAB is strengthening its commitment to sustainable steel production by expanding its collaboration with Swedish manufacturer EAB, which will incorporate fossil-free steel solutions — including SSAB Zero™ — across its main product lines: warehouse systems, industrial doors, and steel building structures.

The partnership signals a major step forward in the use of climate-friendly steel in industrial applications. EAB has already begun integrating SSAB Zero™ into the chassis of its flagship warehouse solution, the Radioshuttle™ — an automated storage and retrieval system recognized for maximizing storage efficiency and reducing operational energy consumption. This product has played a key role in EAB’s international success.

Thomas Hörnfeldt, Vice President of Sustainability at SSAB, expressed pride in the partnership’s momentum:
“EAB’s adoption of SSAB Zero™ shows that fossil-free steel is no longer a concept of the future — it’s making a concrete impact today. Our collaboration illustrates how industry can move forward with real solutions that reduce emissions while maintaining performance.”

EAB’s CEO, Per-Åke Andersson, sees the initiative as a cornerstone of the company’s long-term strategy:
“Our partnership with SSAB embodies a shared vision for transitioning steel toward a more sustainable future. Progress like this isn’t possible in isolation — it requires collaboration and a willingness to drive innovation.”

Headquartered in Smålandsstenar, Sweden, EAB has decades of experience in designing and installing high-quality steel systems used across the globe. The company’s sustainability goals include cutting its carbon emissions in half over the next ten years. Key measures already in place include operating their own solar power park and optimizing transport efficiency.

For SSAB, the cooperation reinforces its leadership in fossil-free steel production. Traditional steelmaking is a major global source of CO₂ emissions. By shifting to new methods — such as hydrogen-based processes — SSAB aims to eliminate the biggest source of climate impact in steelmaking and create a fully fossil-free value chain.

Currently, SSAB offers two key product lines in sustainable steel:

SSAB Zero™: Made from recycled steel using fossil-free energy sources, matching the performance of conventional grades, and available commercially since 2023.

SSAB Fossil-free™ steel: Produced using HYBRIT® technology, which replaces coal with hydrogen in the reduction process — resulting in water vapor instead of CO₂. Pilot batches have already been delivered to major customers in sectors such as automotive, transport, heavy equipment, and consumer goods. The next step involves scaling production for broader commercial availability.
