(PRESS RELEASE) LONDON, 6-Oct-2025 — /EuropaWire/ — FIGO is welcoming over 5,000 delegates from around the world to the XXV FIGO World Congress of Gynecology and Obstetrics, opening on Sunday, 5 October 2025, in Cape Town, South Africa. Returning to Africa for the first time since 2009, the five-day global gathering—running until Thursday, 9 October 2025—will provide a dynamic platform for professionals to share knowledge, collaborate, and drive progress in women’s and girls’ health worldwide.

Building on FIGO’s ongoing mission to advance sexual and reproductive health and rights (SRHR), the Cape Town 2025 Congress will serve as a hub for scientific exchange, leadership development, and advocacy. It will celebrate achievements from the past two years, including the formation of strategic partnerships and the strengthening of evidence-based practices across global healthcare systems.

“Cape Town 2025 marks an important milestone for FIGO and the global women’s health community,” said Professor Kihara Anne-Beatrice, FIGO President (2023–2025). “This Congress reflects our shared commitment to advancing leadership, technical skills, patient education, and social accountability. It is a unique opportunity to translate global insights into local solutions for sexual and reproductive health and rights, addressing country-specific needs and priorities.”

The scientific programme will feature more than 500 international experts presenting the latest research, innovations, and practical insights across key focus areas. Topics will include:

  • Maternal and newborn health: respectful care, preterm birth, and strategies to reduce mortality and morbidity
  • Sexual and reproductive health and rights: contraception, safe abortion, and assisted reproductive technology
  • Surgery and oncology: prevention and treatment of women’s cancers, fistula repair, and pelvic floor disorders
  • Gynaecology across the life course: menopause, endometriosis, and adolescent gynaecology
  • Global women’s health and policy: transgender care, migrant and refugee health, and the impact of climate change on women’s wellbeing

“Delegates will have access to hands-on workshops, simulation labs, and surgical video classrooms designed to strengthen clinical competence in key areas such as maternal-foetal medicine, minimally invasive surgery, and reproductive health,” said Professor Paul Fogarty, Chair of the Congress Organising Committee. “Our goal is to ensure every participant leaves with both the knowledge and the practical skills to make a measurable difference.”

The Congress will also feature the return of the FIGO Film Festival, highlighting powerful stories of advocacy, clinical excellence, and real-world impact from across the globe. Beyond the scientific sessions, the event will foster important discussions on rights, equity, innovation, and justice—connecting obstetricians, gynaecologists, midwives, nurses, and allied health professionals under a shared vision of improving women’s and girls’ health outcomes.

Delegates are encouraged to download the FIGO 2025 mobile app via the Apple App Store or Google Play for event navigation and updates.
