Nokia integrates HPE RAN Intelligent Controller into MantaRay portfolio to strengthen automation and 6G readiness

Nokia integrates HPE RAN Intelligent Controller into MantaRay portfolio to strengthen automation and 6G readiness

(IN BRIEF) Nokia has signed a global licensing deal with Hewlett Packard Enterprise (HPE), gaining access to HPE’s RAN Intelligent Controller (RIC) and strengthening its AI-powered MantaRay SMO platform. Alongside the technology transfer, HPE’s development team has joined Nokia Mobile Networks as of October 1, 2025, bringing additional expertise. The integration enhances Nokia’s capabilities in RAN automation, multi-vendor orchestration, and autonomous networking, helping operators manage complex networks more efficiently and prepare for 6G. Nokia’s MantaRay SMO is already Open RAN compliant, supports the R1 interface for rApps, and has achieved TM Forum Autonomous Networks Level 4 recognition.

(PRESS RELEASE) ESPOO, 2-Oct-2025 — /EuropaWire/ — Nokia has entered into a global technology licensing agreement with HPE that will significantly expand the capabilities of its MantaRay Service Management and Orchestration (SMO) platform. The agreement brings advanced assets into Nokia’s portfolio and strengthens its offering in AI-powered RAN automation and autonomous networking.

As part of the transaction, HPE’s RAN Intelligent Controller (RIC) technology will be integrated into MantaRay, adding new layers of orchestration and automation for network operators. In addition, much of the HPE development team responsible for these technologies has now joined Nokia Mobile Networks, effective October 1, 2025, further reinforcing Nokia’s technical expertise.

According to Tommi Uitto, President of Mobile Networks at Nokia, the deal marks a key milestone in Nokia’s roadmap: “By adding these assets and the talent behind them to our portfolio, we can strengthen our proven MantaRay SMO platform. This gives operators more powerful tools to automate, orchestrate and manage their networks efficiently, while also preparing them for the evolution from 5G to 6G.”

MantaRay SMO has already set benchmarks for the industry, with advanced AI capabilities that enable zero-touch automation and multi-vendor orchestration. The platform has been recognised as meeting TM Forum’s Autonomous Networks Level 4, and it is fully compliant with Open RAN standards, supporting the open R1 interface for rApps. These capabilities enable operators to simplify operations, accelerate digital transformation, and increase the efficiency of multi-vendor environments.

With this new agreement, Nokia aims to broaden its influence in next-generation network automation while providing customers with enhanced flexibility and resilience in managing mobile networks at scale.
