Viettel upgrades Hanoi broadband with Nokia’s BNG-CUPS solution to improve service and efficiency

(IN BRIEF) Viettel is partnering with Nokia to deploy the BNG-CUPS solution in Hanoi, marking the first such deployment in Vietnam. The upgrade will replace Viettel’s legacy system, improve broadband service reliability, and boost energy efficiency, with Nokia’s FP5-powered 7750 Service Router expected to reduce energy consumption by 75%. Viettel will also adopt Nokia’s Network Services Platform to streamline operations and scale its network more flexibly. The project supports Vietnam’s digital economy ambitions and reflects Viettel’s commitment to providing reliable, future-ready broadband services.

(PRESS RELEASE) ESPOO, 19-Seo-2025 — /EuropaWire/ — Viettel has announced plans to upgrade its fixed broadband infrastructure in the Hanoi metropolitan area through the deployment of Nokia’s Broadband Network Gateway-Control User Plane Separation (BNG-CUPS) solution. The move is aimed at improving network availability, enhancing the quality of broadband services for subscribers, and increasing overall operational and energy efficiency.

Under the agreement, Viettel will transition from its existing legacy platform to Nokia’s BNG-CUPS architecture. The solution will simplify network operations, allow greater flexibility in scaling, and provide a more efficient platform to meet rising demands for broadband services.

Vietnam’s digital economy is expanding rapidly, supported by the government’s National Digital Transformation strategy, which targets digital economy contributions of 30% to GDP by 2030. Robust connectivity is seen as a critical foundation for this growth, particularly as adoption of e-commerce, fintech, and cloud services continues to accelerate.

“This initiative reiterates our commitment to continuously elevate network performance to deliver a best-in-class experience for our subscribers,” said Nguyen Tran Quynh, Deputy Director of Technical Global Center at Viettel. “We are excited to collaborate with Nokia to modernize the fixed broadband network while streamlining our daily operations. The solution will also help us enhance the energy efficiency of our networks.”

Nokia, which helped define and implement the BNG-CUPS standard, will supply its 7750 Service Router powered by the energy-efficient FP5 chipset, capable of cutting energy consumption by up to 75%. The company’s Network Services Platform will further simplify network management and allow Viettel to respond quickly to changing customer needs. The separation of control and user planes under the CUPS architecture will enable Viettel to scale flexibly and bring services closer to end-users.

“This is a milestone project for us as it marks the first deployment of BNG-CUPS in Vietnam,” said Kent Wong, Vice President and Head of IP Networks, Asia Pacific at Nokia. “We are delighted that our solution will enable Viettel to modernize its broadband infrastructure and move towards a more reliable, energy-efficient, and high-performing network.”

The project highlights Viettel’s strategy to continuously improve its broadband services while aligning with Vietnam’s national goals for digital transformation and sustainable infrastructure development.
