Evonik opens world-scale alkoxides plant in Singapore to strengthen Asian supply and sustainability goals

(IN BRIEF) Evonik has inaugurated a new world-scale alkoxides production facility on Jurong Island, Singapore, with a capacity of 100,000 metric tons per year. The investment strengthens regional supply security and supports industries including biodiesel, pharmaceuticals, and chemical recycling. Designed to meet the highest sustainability standards, the facility can operate with net-zero Scope 1 and 2 carbon emissions. Part of Evonik’s Custom Solutions segment, the plant completes the company’s global alkoxides network, joining sites in Germany, the U.S., and Argentina. Evonik executives and Singapore’s Minister Grace Fu emphasized the project’s role in supporting Asia’s growing demand for sustainable, high-performance chemistry and in advancing Evonik’s innovation-driven growth strategy.

(PRESS RELEASE) HANAU, 27-Aug-2025 — /EuropaWire/ — Evonik has officially opened a new world-scale alkoxides plant on Jurong Island, Singapore, significantly strengthening its catalyst portfolio and enhancing supply security for customers across Asia. The facility, with an annual production capacity of 100,000 metric tons, is the latest addition to Evonik’s global alkoxides network and marks a key step in the company’s growth strategy for the Custom Solutions segment.

First announced in May 2023, the mid double-digit million euro investment reinforces Evonik’s ability to meet rising demand for alkoxides in industries such as biodiesel, pharmaceuticals, and chemical recycling. The plant has been designed to the highest safety and environmental standards and is capable of operating with net-zero Scope 1 and 2 carbon emissions, aligning with Evonik’s long-term sustainability roadmap.

“This facility is more than just an expansion – it’s a statement of our long-term commitment to Asia,” said Lauren Kjeldsen, Chief Operating Officer Custom Solutions and Member of the Evonik Executive Board. “By producing closer to our customers, we improve supply agility and resilience while also supporting Singapore’s vision for a sustainable chemical industry.”

The inauguration ceremony was attended by Singapore’s Minister for Sustainability and the Environment, and Minister-in-Charge of Trade Relations, Grace Fu, who highlighted Evonik’s timely delivery of the project: “In less than three years, Evonik has delivered this state-of-the-art plant on schedule and within budget. Investments such as this demonstrate strong confidence in Singapore as a hub for scaling specialty chemicals to meet global demand.”

The new plant completes Evonik’s global alkoxides production network, which already includes sites in Germany, the U.S., and Argentina, creating a reliable supply chain with local responsiveness for customers worldwide. Subsea grid connectivity allows the plant to run almost entirely on renewable power, making it a strategic contributor to Evonik’s transformation toward sustainable, innovation-driven growth.

As part of the Custom Solutions segment, the facility supports Evonik’s ambition to deliver tailored, science-based solutions in fast-growing markets such as bio-based fuels, the energy transition, and the circular economy. The main application of alkoxides is in biodiesel production from renewable feedstocks like used cooking oil and other waste fats, with further uses in fine chemicals and active pharmaceutical ingredients.

The plant’s opening underscores Evonik’s position as a global leader in catalysts and sustainable chemistry, combining cutting-edge technology with a commitment to innovation and customer focus.
