E.ON Hits 10,000 Digital Secondary Substations, Accelerating Smart Grid Rollout by 500 Units Monthly

(IN BRIEF) E.ON grid companies have installed their 10,000th digital secondary substation in Germany, a critical link for real‐time monitoring between medium‐ and low‐voltage networks. As renewable generation and electrification grow, these smart substations send two million measurements per minute to a central platform to bolster stability and integrate green power. E.ON’s proprietary standardized design has accelerated deployment to 500 units monthly and streamlines procurement and construction. The resulting data enables advanced services like grid‐friendly EV charging and lowers congestion management costs, underpinning a more efficient, affordable energy transition.

(PRESS RELEASE) ESSEN, 29-Jul-2025 — /EuropaWire/ — E.ON grid companies have reached a major digitization milestone with the commissioning of the 10,000th digital secondary substation in their German network. As photovoltaic installations, electric vehicles and heat pumps proliferate—E.ON has already hooked up over 1.9 million renewable energy systems totaling more than 103 GW—the need for real‑time monitoring and control of distribution grids has never been greater. Digital secondary substations bridge regional medium‑voltage and local low‑voltage networks, transmitting some two million measurements per minute to a centralized data platform where automated processing ensures safe, efficient operation and seamless renewable integration.

Thomas König, E.ON Board Member for Energy Networks, commented: “A successful energy transition relies on smart, robust distribution grids. Our digital secondary substations—what we call ‘copper with brains’—unlock maximum local grid capacity, accelerate green energy uptake and create the data foundation for innovative future services. Reaching 10,000 units underscores E.ON’s leadership as Germany’s largest distribution system operator in driving this transformation.”

E.ON’s internally developed standard for digital secondary substations has harmonized systems and processes across all its grid companies, simplifying procurement, manufacturing and supplier collaboration. This uniformity has enabled a rapid rollout schedule of up to 500 new substations per month.

Looking ahead, the wealth of grid data will support solutions such as intelligent electric‐vehicle charging, dynamic demand management and reduced congestion‐management costs—delivering a more cost‐effective energy transition and increased renewable power availability for customers.
