University of Warwick and Monash University Unveil Research to Enhance Inclusivity in Multicultural Cricket Teams

(IN BRIEF) The University of Warwick and Monash University have unveiled the results of a research project aimed at enhancing inclusivity and cohesion within multicultural cricket teams, particularly those involving South Asian migrant players. Led by Dr. Kieran File and Dr. Lucas Santos, the study investigates how everyday behaviours and communication practices impact team dynamics, offering practical strategies to foster inclusion. The project highlights how small, unintentional actions can lead to exclusion but, when addressed, can strengthen a sense of belonging. This work, which builds on findings from the Independent Commission for Equity in Cricket, also provides insights for coaches, players, and administrators to build inclusive cricket environments. The research is part of the ongoing collaboration within the Monash Warwick Alliance, aiming to address broader community cohesion issues in areas with significant immigrant populations.

(PRESS RELEASE) COVENTRY, 27-Jan-2025 — /EuropaWire/ — The University of Warwick, in collaboration with Monash University, has revealed the outcomes of an impactful research project focused on fostering inclusivity and cohesion within multicultural cricket teams.

The research, part of the Monash Warwick Alliance, was led by Dr. Kieran File from the University of Warwick and Dr. Lucas Santos from Monash University. It specifically examines how multicultural teams, particularly those involving South Asian migrant players, can create environments of greater inclusivity and belonging.

Through a detailed exploration of team behaviours and interactions, the study provides a comprehensive understanding of how everyday actions can either promote inclusion or inadvertently reinforce exclusion. Dr. Kieran File, Principal Investigator at the University of Warwick, noted, “Our findings show that many of the barriers to inclusion within multicultural teams arise from small, everyday actions. While these behaviours may be unintentional, when they are thoughtfully addressed, they can foster stronger bonds and a greater sense of belonging.”

To help teams navigate these inclusion challenges, the research offers practical insights into how to modify these everyday actions to build more inclusive environments where all members, regardless of background, can succeed.

The research’s findings were showcased at a special event held at Edgbaston Stadium on Thursday 23 January, marking the completion of Phase 1 of the study.

Research Context and Objectives

The study addresses critical concerns highlighted in the Independent Commission for Equity in Cricket’s report, Holding up a Mirror to Cricket, which emphasized the longstanding struggles faced by South Asian migrant players in the UK.

Among the key research questions were:

  • How can multicultural cricket teams achieve and maintain inclusivity and cohesion?
  • What impact do communication and daily interactions have on team dynamics and inclusivity?

Using qualitative methodologies, including semi-structured interviews and discourse analysis, the research team has developed actionable strategies that players, coaches, administrators, and parents can implement to create more inclusive cricket environments.

Dr. Lucas Santos, Principal Investigator at Monash University, emphasized the vital role of sport in community building, saying, “Sport is essential in creating a sense of belonging and fostering strong communities. This resource aims to guide how cricket teams can become more inclusive and welcoming to people from all backgrounds.”

The findings not only shed light on team dynamics but also contribute to broader discussions about community cohesion in areas with large immigrant populations.

A Partnership with Global Impact

This research underscores the ongoing partnership between the University of Warwick and Monash University within the Monash Warwick Alliance, which was established in 2012. Together, the two institutions have leveraged their expertise in sports, communication, and community cohesion to address the challenges of inclusivity in multicultural sports teams.

About the Monash Warwick Alliance
In 2012 Monash University and The University of Warwick embarked on a ground-breaking partnership, the Monash Warwick Alliance (MWA), a pioneering model for international collaboration woven into the very fabric of both institutions.

Founded on shared principles of academic excellence and social impact, both universities had risen to international prominence through world-class research, a commitment to providing an exceptional educational offering, and a dedication to addressing complex challenges. The Alliance emerged as a natural progression, harnessing and enhancing these combined strengths to forge a unique synergy.

The Alliance was established to promote and develop the excellent collaboration between researchers, educators, students, and professional staff, and harness our collective strengths to empower research and education activities.
