Nokia Partners with Openreach to Build Scalable Open-Access Fiber Network for the UK

(IN BRIEF) Nokia has been chosen by Openreach to build its One Network Platform, an open-access fiber network designed to connect millions of UK homes and businesses to high-speed broadband. The partnership aims to expand Openreach’s coverage from 17 million to 25 million connected premises by 2026. Nokia’s solution includes modular data center architecture and network domain controllers that will automate operations and reduce operational support system complexity by 85%. This will provide flexibility and scalability to meet growing demand for broadband in urban and rural areas.

(PRESS RELEASE) ESPOO, 10-Jan-2025 — /EuropaWire/ — Nokia has been selected by Openreach to design and implement its One Network Platform, a groundbreaking open-access fiber network aimed at connecting millions of UK homes and businesses to high-speed broadband. This collaboration is set to expand Openreach’s reach from 17 million connected premises to 25 million by 2026, in response to the increasing demand for faster, more reliable broadband services across the country.

Openreach’s open-access wholesale broadband network serves approximately 300 communication service providers, delivering ultrafast full fiber services to a diverse range of locations, from urban hubs to remote rural communities. Powered by Nokia’s advanced technology, the new network will offer the scale, flexibility, and agility necessary to meet growing market demands, while minimizing the number of exchange buildings needed to cover the vast geographical area.

At the core of Nokia’s solution is a modular data center architecture, which enables Openreach to build a large-scale, multi-service open-access network that will significantly reduce both the power and space requirements at Ethernet access exchange sites—by over 50%. The architecture is designed to accommodate various deployment models, ensuring that the fiber network is efficiently deployed to serve different population densities.

Nokia’s Altiplano and NSP network domain controllers will allow Openreach to fully automate its fiber connectivity services across a range of technologies, including Point-to-Point, GPON, and XGS PON. This intent-based model will dramatically simplify network operations, reducing operational support systems (OSS) complexity by 85%. The solution also includes streaming telemetry, offering detailed insights into the network’s performance and behavior.

Trevor Linney, Director of Network Technology at Openreach, commented, “This partnership marks an important step in our mission to create a future-proof, multi-service platform. By integrating Nokia’s innovative domain controllers and data center routers, we can enhance network automation, improve visibility, and offer greater flexibility to our customers, ultimately reducing operational costs and improving network efficiency.”

Geert Heyninck, General Manager of Broadband Networks at Nokia, emphasized the importance of open-access networks for the future of broadband. “We’re excited to support Openreach in delivering fiber connectivity to millions across the UK. The scalability and flexibility of our solution are key to meeting the growing broadband demand, helping Openreach automate operations, optimize resources, and create a resilient, future-ready network serving both urban and rural communities.”
