(PRESS RELEASE) LIVERPOOL, 14-Oct-2024 — /EuropaWire/ — The University of Liverpool has established a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Roche Diagnostics UK and Ireland aimed at enhancing research and innovation for better health outcomes and community well-being. This partnership highlights the University’s commitment to addressing local health disparities while also tackling broader global health issues. By leveraging advanced commercialization strategies and collaborative efforts, the partnership aims to align with Roche Diagnostics’ mission of providing future-focused healthcare solutions.

Both organizations have a long-standing collaborative history, particularly in areas where the University excels in research, such as Biomarkers, Population Health, and Digital Health. A notable project involves Professor Sarah Coupland of the Liverpool Ocular Oncology Research Group, who has partnered with Roche on an InnovateUK digital pathology initiative. This project focuses on developing algorithms for analyzing rare eye tumors, linking with other regional centers to facilitate improved early detection and treatment.

The partnership with Roche Diagnostics also contributes to the Liverpool City Region’s health and life sciences initiatives, supporting economic development through collaborative projects, programs, and workforce training. One significant future endeavor is the partnership with the University’s Civic Health Innovation Labs (CHIL) to create the world’s first design studio dedicated to enhancing real-world diagnostic solutions for population health.

Professor Tim Jones, Vice-Chancellor of the University, expressed his enthusiasm for the partnership, emphasizing shared values and the goal of making Liverpool a hub for health innovation. Professor Iain Buchan, Director of CHIL, highlighted the focus on utilizing NHS data to improve early diagnosis and access to testing, especially for vulnerable populations. Chris Hudson, Director of Access and Innovation at Roche, viewed the MoU as a significant step toward pioneering research and innovation that can lead to meaningful changes in healthcare.
