Port of Grimsby Showcases Modern Transformation Through Local Artist’s Exhibition

Over the past two years, Mackie has captured the port’s transformation from its historical fishing roots to its modern role in offshore wind and automotive distribution. The idea for the residency was proposed by Creative Start and WE1 Heritage, and supported by the port’s management. The exhibition will be open to the public starting September 14 at Coffee on the Docks.

The exhibition, which captures the port’s evolution from its historical fishing roots to its current role as a hub for offshore wind and automotive distribution, marks a significant cultural moment for the port.

Dale Mackie, born in Cleethorpes and celebrated for his depictions of local heritage scenes, spent the past two years embedded within the port, painting its modern landscape. The result is a vibrant collection of works that contrast Grimsby’s rich fishing history with its dynamic present.

The idea for an artist in residence was proposed by Sam Delaney of Creative Start and Steve Ridlington of WE1 Heritage. Simon Bird, Regional Director for Humber ports, embraced the concept as a way to celebrate the port’s transformation and its role in the region’s artistic community.

“The paintings Dale has produced showcase a dynamic Grimsby that honors its past while embracing its future,” Bird said.

Mackie expressed his gratitude for the opportunity, noting that the experience allowed him to explore and document areas of the port that are rarely seen by the public.

The exhibition will be open to the public at Coffee on the Docks, 2 Auckland Road, starting September 14, as part of the Heritage Open Day.
